Stupid small car!

The carseat we got doesn't fit in my car. UGH! Seriously, everything has just been difficult. I drive a Scion XA and I don't know if we will be able to find one that fits! We had to move the front seat way forward and all the measurements I see for carseats are all within an inch and a half of the one we have. How much of a difference will that make? I guess we will just have to try a few out at the store and go without a base if we have to. I don't really care for that idea too much.

  • We have to have ours on the passengers side with the seat pushed up almost all the way. Our seats are really slanted on the bottom so it was a pain to get it leveled.

  • We have to see my Jetta because we can't fit two carseats in the back seat. DS was tight when he was the only one in the middle with the gap between the front seats. There's no way we can make it work now. Luckily it's older and was just my car for commuting at this point anyway, but I agree that it's very frustrating!

  • We use my car for just about everything so there has to be room for someone to sit in the front passenger seat. DH drives a Miata so there's really no other choice. I'm really hoping we can find one that fits with a base because this one is just not going to work, my knees were touching the glove compartment when I tried to sit in the front seat.

  • When I was looking for car seats, I tried to find a car seat that had the shortest front to back length possible.  As it was, both DH and I drive cars without much of a backseat and there is no way we are trading them--DH drives his dream car, a Mitsubishi Evolution MR, and I love my MS3.

When we went to install the car seat in his car, I did have to put the passenger seat in a more upright position than previously.  (We put the car seat on the passenger side, since we drive manual and husband has a five point harness in his car, preventing use of the driver side back seat.) Once we did that, we were able to scoot the passenger chair further back to provide more legroom.  It definitely doesn't help that I'm 5'10 and all legs but my knees are no longer hitting the dash board and the seat doesn't touch the back of the car seat.  For a year or two, I can live.

I really do think an inch or two would make a difference.  Just putting the passenger chair upright gave me an extra inch, which made for a much more comfortable ride.

  • I drive a small SUV and I still had to move the passenger seat forward to make sure the car seat fit properly. Can you install the carseat in the center back seat?

  • probably a dumb question but did you put it in the middle? we fit a myride65 rear facing in my civic when we put it in the middle. and that myride is friggin' ginormous.
  • FWIW, we had to move the front seats forward quite a bit on our Fusion (mid-size sedan) and CX-7 (crossover SUV). It was amazing how much room our car seat takes up!

yes! when DS was a baby we took him to the car show in his carseat/carrier and put it in the back of all sorts of cars to see how it would fit. even in the infant seat it's amazing how few are actually long enough to do it comfortably.

we drive a Volvo XC70 now and that *just* fits a RF carseat (not the myride - that still has to go in the middle RF) without me having to move my seat up. and it's HUGE.

  • Ford Mustang convertible.  The base doesn't even fit on the seat so it is going to be a straight seat installation to make it fit at all and then no one can sit in front of the seat because the passenger seat has to be all the way forward.  I have been asking for a new car for a while, hopefully this is what convinces DH. Good Luck!
  • We were able to get it to fit in the middle. It JUST barely fits with the longest part inbetween the two front seats with both seats in the right position. My owner's manual says to put it on either side but the anchors are still the right distance apart in the middle and the seat is flat so I don't see any reason not to put it there. It's level and everything so that's where it's staying. I really can't believe that there aren't more smaller options out there with how many tiny cars there are. I would rather have an infant seat I can only use for maybe 6 months then switch to a rear-facing convertible than have to start out with the convertible. Oh well, not my problem anymore!
