PICC Line bruising....?

I am waiting on my doc to call me back now but it has been since Tuesday when I got my PICC inserted. Now, I was in the hospital for 7 days because of my Hyperemesis Gravidarium. I was on a lot of medications that knocked me out so I wouldn't vomit. I don't remember a lot of the things they said. So, is it normal to have really bad bruising below the insertion? TIA

Re: PICC Line bruising....?

  • I'm a nurse, and yes, it's normal. As long as the BRUISES themselves seem normal... just color, some tenderness... if you're dealing with any swelling, puffiness, oozing (hopefully they have it covered with a tagaderm that lets you see the insertion site?)  you'd want to bug them.  You might see some narley colors come along, but as long as it seem/feels normal, I say you're good.

  • Awesome, thanks! It was sore the first day or two but other than that, its just the bruises that were worrying me. But I am getting it cleaned out and flushed again on Wednesday too. So, if I have no problems before then, I guess they will know by then too! :) Thank you! My doc just called me and said the same thing! She said if I was worried I could go there tomorrow and get it looked at but I think I should be good! :)

  • Hey, I spent two full weeks in the hospital ... I was on phenergan because zofran didn't work ... So I slept alot ... Left hospital with a picc line also ... You wouldn't believe the bruising .... And it started out red bruising then turned ... It's ok ... And when I had mine removed i was starting a severe rash to the dressing ... So then I dealt with a nasty nasty rash ... But any questions feel free to message ms ... I'm on bedrest so I'm on here all day off and on....also mine was sore for about 10 days ... They say a couple days but mine was longer ... My muscles hurt!

  • gfornkohl- Thanks! Do you have HG as well? They had me on Zofran, Phenergan, Reglan, Pepcid, vitamin fluids, regular fluids, and Prednisone, and I feel like I am forgetting something! But yeah, it was all too rough for my veins! The picc line is amazing but annoying. I dont even lay on it because Im nervous I will mess something up!
