Preemies

Could this be reflux?

I have noticed that lately LO has been spitting up after he eats and choking/gagging a bit after I give him the bottle.  I currently BF and supplement with formula because my supply is low.  Almost 2 hours after feeding he will spit up and gag on it and I notice the milk stuck on his tongue and looks a bit frothy.  After feeding I hold him upright for about 30 minutes but still be fussy/cranky after he has had enough.  Could this be his formula (neosure) or possibly reflux?

It will get so bad sometimes that he will scream so loudly it comes out of his nose and is all over his mouth/cheeks/chin that I feel so bad for him.

Any suggestions?! TIA!!

Re: Could this be reflux?

  • It could be - it's common for preemies and often it isn't diagnosed until they are bigger. My guy passed the ph probe and was discharged from NICU for two weeks - at which point he was readmitted and failed. The nurses had suspected it all along but the doctors couldn't say for certain.

Spitting up won't really count as a symptom with your pedi - it will be more like discomfort, arching back, grunting, coughing, crying in pain/inconsolable - my doctor always says 'all babies spit up' in her happy voice - it's all the other things that aren't normal. As for the milk tongue as far as I know that isn't a symptom - might be a formula thing? I heard a discussion about another baby re milk tongue but DS never had so I spaced it.

  • Yes, that sounds like reflux, especially with the foaming after.  DD started doing that when we switched to straight Neosure. We then went to Similac Advance and then to Similac Sensitive, to Similac Soy, and then to Up and Up (Target) Soy. We discovered that a dairy intolerance was causing her reflux symptoms.  The symptoms disappeared when we switched to soy formula and we didn't have to medicate her.

  • if he's fussy after eating, it could be reflux.  DS1 had reflux, DS2 just needed dairy-free formula and it helped his reflux symptoms.  I'd try switching to dairy-free and talk to your pedi.
