I posted below that a friend (experienced Mom) & I spent hours at BRU yesterday going row by row so that she could clue me in on everything that I need and things that are a waste. Hope this helps!
Below are the things that I didn't already have so I added to my list. They're only the list of things that I may need during the 1st few weeks. I decided not to go nuts & only buy things as baby needs them. And, obviously, a lof of the list is her opinon only, so take it for what it's worth (don't want to get anyone upset if they disagree).
- nightlight (solar powered)
- dimmer switch for nursery ceiling light
- only by 1 or 2 of a few different kinds of BASIC bottles (with different nipples)- she said not to spend money on colic bottles, etc. b/c baby may not need them & she said not to buy a "set" b/c her baby would only take specific nipples & we won't know the kind of nipple that your baby prefers until baby is here.
- Same thing with pacificers as above- only buy a few until you get to know your baby(only by 1 pack for NB, the 2 month nipple is the same it's just the plastic part that is bigger)
- Paci grip to attach pacificer to baby (good idea for daycare)
- good bottle brush & think about how to air dry your bottles. They have all sorts of trays for that, but she just uses a dish drying mat.
- If your baby is going to daycare, you may want to check out Inchbug.com. Rather than labeling bottles with Sharpies, you can buy bands to label.
- about 6-10 baby bibs (plastic lined ones for when baby is older)
- small pack of baby sized washcloths
- "baby recliner" to use for baths in your bathtub- she recommends this over the giant plastic tubs that are difficult to store
- Boppy & 1-2 slipcovers (she wrapped hers in burp cloths so that she wasn't always having to change the slipcover) & Bring this to the hospital!!
- consider a diaper pail (as a FTM, I was shocked to learn that babies can poop 10x/day!)
- Emergency Kits are a waste- you really only need a rectal thermometer, nail clippers, and a nail file. The hospital will give you a nose suction cleaner. And, all of the syringes that you may need will be sold/given with any medicine that baby should need.
- An ear thermometer is nice to have once baby is older
- Diaper cream- she suggests only using A&D Diaper Rash cream only when the baby really needs it (not every day)
- Baby body wash - Avenno or Johnson & Johnson in Lavendar
- Infant Car Seat & extra base (she recommends Chicco, Britax, or The First Years. Avoid Graco for car seats & strollers)
- Mat for under car seats
- Car mirrors to see baby in rear view mirror
- Stroller- She advises against a travel system & I agree. I was thinking about only using the metal frame that the infant carrier snaps into until baby is too big then upgrading the stroller. But, she said once baby is over 15lbs it's too hard to use the carrier. She is in love with her City Mini Stroller (the carrier can also snap into this stoller). I'm undecided on this one.
- Any accessories for strollers (trays, rain shields, etc) are nice to have, but not critical
- I need a running stroller & she suggested checking out places like Once Upon a Child... a lot of people have intentions of using them & then never do.
- Pack N Play (for downstairs napping & child containment)- Obviously, all of the added features (sound, mobile, baby changing station) are not necessary.
- 2 sets of fitted sheets for Pack N Play
- Waterproof mattress pad for crib
- Use Flannel waterproof mattress sheets (2) for on top of sheets (esp while baby is little) so that you don't have to change sheets everytime there is a leak
- 2-3 sets of fitted crib sheets (she likes jersey knit)
- Crib mattress (I already bought mine, but she likes the lighter foam kind over the springs)
- 1-2 changing pad covers
- Adens & Anais brand Swaddle Blankets (she liked these over the kind that velcro closed)
- Vulli Sofie the Giraffe toy is critical for teething baby
- Rent a breast pump (particuarlly for FTMs), but if not buy a Medela brand- she didn't BF so she didn't have a ton of other recommendations on pumps, etc.
- White Noise maker (nice to have)
- Baby Monitor (if your room is close enough, you may want to try without & see how you do. they were able to easily here baby, but if you feel like you can't sleep, then get one)
- Diapers- The hospital will give you some to take home & only buy a small pack for at home until you get to know what brand works best for your baby.
- MaxiPads for after birth- The kind they give you in the hospital are not deluxe by any means.
Re: Baby Supply List
I agree with most of the list but I do not use johnson and johnson products, so for me that's another "find what brand works for you" type of things.
I also have no issues with travel systems. I had one with my daughter and will more than likely get another because I got quite a bit of use out of hers and never really felt it was all that bulky for me.

It's probably just preference. Someone here posted a link to Lucie's List awhile back and she didn't have anything bad to say. I also had Graco for my daughter and liked it.

Thanks!
I also got a Graco. Baby Bargains highly recommends the snug ridet, so I went with that. I also got the travel system. My sister had one and LOVED it. I'm going to trust the judgement and overall ratings from Baby Bargains and keep my Graco sung ride.
Other than the few things mentioned already this is a good list.
Just to note, Graco is a perfectly good brand. It has passed all the safety standards. It IS more specific to its own brand though. For example, you probably can't put a different brand car seat in a Graco stroller or vice versa.
Travel systems can be bulky, but they are also pretty convenient. If LO is asleep in the car seat it is much nicer to be able to just unsnap it from the base in the car and snap it into the stroller to get going than it is to pick them up and transfer them to a stroller without waking them. Plus, a lot of strollers really aren't made for very young infants. It's not the end-all be-all of toting your kid around, but it can be convenient. I think if you find a stroller that your infant seat can clip into safely, that may be the perfect way to go, instead of getting the specific stroller to go with the car seat. It will save you from buying another stroller later when LO is out of the infant seat and sitting up in the stroller by himself.
We use Targets brand of baby soap/shampoo and lotion. Works great, smells great. MUCH cheaper than the name brands. Use what works best.
Nothing wrong at all with Graco. My friend just mentioned that she found the clips, latches, etc more difficult to use & that the fabric doesn't clean as well as the other brands.
Thank you for sharing your list! It is so fun (and helpful) to check out what other mamas are buying.
I do want to put out there that a mat for under the car seat a mirror for in front of the car seat are somewhat controversial items. The mat can undermine the safety of the seat in an accident and the mirror can act as a projectile and hit the baby if the car makes a sudden stop or has an accident. They recommend nothing in the back seat, on or around baby and all items in an open style trunk covered. Food for thought.
Also, to reply to mamabear about the travel system- most any stroller can become a "travel system" by buying the adapter for it. The OP mentioned the City Mini stroller, and there is an adapter available for it to snap the infant seat on.
