If you are from the Dayton/Xenia area...

And if you have any experience with homebirth/homebirth midwives in the area, OR Miami Valley or Good Sam birthing centers, please share with me. I'll be moving to OH shortly before my daughter is born so I'm trying to do as much research as I can before I get there.

I am particularly interested in waterbirth for labor and delivery, no unnecessary interventions (Vit K and eye ointment as well), and my toddler being able to come and go as he wishes. I am also looking for a midwife rather than OBGYN. I was planning a home waterbirth with midwife here in TX and may still do that in OH so if you've had a homebirth there please comment as well.

Thanks ladies!

MVH has a birthing center right there in the hospital called Family Beginnings.  It is fantastic, really nice big rooms, whirlpool tubs, nurses trained just for that unit.  They are for med free births only. The nice thing though is that if you change your mind during birth or need some sort of intervention, the regular unit is just around the corner.

The downside is there are only 3 beds, so if it is full, you do go to the regular unit, which is what happened to me, but I still had a FANTASTIC natural birth experience at MVH.  The nurses never pushed drugs, and my doula was welcomed (which I would highly recommend a doula as well).  They had birthing balls, let me labor in the tub and all sorts of positions. I did have to have a hep lock, but no IV until it was absolutely necessary (I had to have a c-section).  Just call early when you are in labor and see the status of the unit.  If someone has had their LO, they will move them to the regular recovery rooms if they need that room for a mom in labor since the unit is about the labor experience, recovery is no different in the regular unit than their unit.

I used Horlacher and Assoc. for my OB.  There are 3 OB's (2 men and a woman), and a NP.  LOVE them, very supportive of natural birth, I know for sure Horlacher will deliver in a tub, I'm guessing Dr. Wood  probably would too.  The woman wasn't there when I delivered DD.  They are at MVH.

ETA:  As for your toddler, I don't know about in labor, but my nephew visited while I was recovering in the hospital and he was 2 at the time.  There may be restrictions during cold/flu season, I had DD in Sept.

ETA:  Edited to say Dr. Wood and not Dr. Guy...Dr. Wood is Dr. Horlacher's partner.

I, too, planned on going to Family Beginnings at MVH but had to be induced so I delivered at Miami Valley. I still had a wonderful natural birth. Dr. Horlacher was my OBGYN, but Dr. Guy was on call and he delivered my daughter. Dr. Guy will do tub births as he is the founder of Family Beginnings.

Also, Dr. Wood (who is Dr. Horlacher's partner) was awesome. The first nurse I had at MVH didn't want me to get out of bed or sit on a ball or anything because I was hooked up to the fetal monitor. However, Dr. Wood was there when I was induced and he told the nurse to let me do whatever I wanted as far as sitting/standing/etc. etc.

I am pregnant again and I am now seeing Dr. Guy. But that's just personal preference ... nothing against Horlacher's office.

If you have any questions, let me know!

I've heard great things about Dr. Horlacher.  I need a new ob/gyn & another of my doctors rec'ed that practice.  Also, I believe that it is illegal for licenced midwives to do home births in the state of Ohio.  However, I only have fur children, so don't quote me on that!

I have heard the same things as well.  If you're set on a home birth, you might want to look into a DONA and DALN (Dayton Area Labor Network) for a doula.

I love Family Beginings also.  Went there for my DS 2 years ago and plan on going next month with DD.  Also used Dr Horlacher/Wood/Kidd, but Dr Guy is a great doctor as well.  Last time I had no trouble getting a room, someone was in one of them and 2 open when I called.  So you do never know if there is room.  I plan on having DD in the water which they allow, actually prefer you to pick how you deliver.  I won't go anywhere else!

I googled-is this Dr. Stephen Guy at MVH?

That's the one. He also has locations in Centerville and Vandalia.

Found this on another board. I personally love Dr. Guy but don't have any experience with the midwives. It looks like there might be another place with midwives, too.

I was going to add more, but everyone else has provided such great info.  Good luck with your move!  I also live in Xenia.  :)
