Postpartum Depression

Zoloft and breastfeeding

I was very anxious just all around feeling awful still around 3 weeks PP (have a history of anxiety, mild depression and eating disorders in the past). My OB prescribed zoloft for me on a low dose. Shortly after, I noticed a total tank in my milk supply. Has anyone else had this? I know I need the zoloft but I really worry about ny supply too. Just curious if anyone has ever seen a correlation. TIA.

Re: Zoloft and breastfeeding

  • I didn't see a reduction in supply after starting Zoloft.  I still breastfed normally for 2 months after beginning the drug.  I ended up stopping last week b/c I got a raging sinus infection, and my supply tanked due to a combination of a 3 day fever, antibiotics & decongestants.

I did notice a bit of a dip in supply when I was at my worst with the anxiety.  I just kept putting the baby to my breast & pumping a lot, and the supply came back.  Good luck!

  • I didn't notice a dip after I started taking Zoloft, but stress/anxiety can cause a dip in your supply. If you haven't tried taking Fenugreek capsules yet, they are really helpful at boosting supply. My OB told me to take them along with Blessed Thistle, but I only noticed the Fenugreek to be helpful. The only downside to taking it is that it makes you smell like maple syrup.

  • Take Fenugreek and get Mothers Milk Tea (target sells it!)... both of those helped me (not b/c of Zoloft but b/c of other reasons)

  • I didn't notice a dip but I am only on 25mg. I hope you get to feeling better soon.
