What do you think?

Is the spelling "Zooey" cruel instead of "Zoey"? I am a fan of Zooey Deschanel, and I love her work, and her voice, the meaning of the name is "eternal life" but I saw people on a yahoo board rate the name as "cruel to children"...people may think it sounds like zoo-ee, but its not, its just another way of spelling it. Just like people who name their girls zowie, its different but sounds the same. I would have things custom made for her but it just bothers me...anyways, do you think I would be "cruel" to name my girl zooey instead of zoey? Let me know what you think!

Boy name we chose is Dexter. <3

  • I don't know if I'd call it cruel to go with "Zooey", but I do like "Zoey" better.

  • Cruel is a bit much, but personally I like traditional spelling.

  • I don't think it's cruel. Zooey Deschanel has gotten more popular so that will probably help.

Also, both of your names made me think you and your DH really like TV.

  • I'm all for unique names but I feel like unique spellings of known names gets a little confusing, either how to pronounce it or how to spell it. So that being said I would pick Zoey, although I do love Zooey Deschanel.

  • I'm not a fan of the name but I actually prefer Zooey. Probably just because I like Zooey Deschanel.

  • I don't think it's cruel but you will constantly have to spell her name to others. However I LOVE the name! That's my nieces name but she spells it Zoe.

Lol its mostly because of music for Zooey. Dexter was a name we saw on a building in seattle, and realized we loved it, we don't watch the show, haha :)

  • Can I just say I hate Zooey D? She always sounds like she is bored. I think she is a horrible actress.
  • I said zoo-y when I read it- stick with Zoe or Zoe-y- if you have to add a y, but I can see so many things that could go wrong with teasing because of how the name is spelled- good luck

  • I love the name, but I think the spelling is horrible. 'Zoe' is so much prettier.
  • I'm a teacher, and I've seen some pretty bizzar-o names and spellings of names, and honestly I see nothing wrong with "Zooey."  If I saw that name on my roster, I wouldn't even bat an eye.  In fact, I almost feel like "Zooey" is just as "normal" now as "Zoey" or even "Zoe" just because of Ms. Deschanel.  I think it's a fabulous name and you should go for it!

  • And BTW, I'm struggling with a name situation too.  Two of our <deceased> grandfathers are named August and James, and I would love to combine the two in their honor and (if it's a boy) call him "AJ", but will he have to go through life explaining that his name is not August but AJ? (That is, unless when he gets older he prefers August....)

Anyway, good luck with whatever you pick and trust me, whether it's Zooey or Zoey or Zoe, it won't be close to as weird as most of the names I've seen out there!

You're so sweet, thank you so much for the suppor! Sometimes I just would rather not post stuff because I'm afraid of the answers I will get...about your future son's name (if its a boy) I love the names August James, I think the fact that you want his nickname to be AJ and be called that rather than "August" is cute and normal. My brother is a Jr. and his name is Donald John, he never goes by Donald, occasionally Don now, since he is 31, but throughout his whole life, he has only introduced himself as DJ because Donald felt too old for him. It shouldn't be trouble for him when he is in school, it would be easy like you said, there are names out there that are just insane spelling. Again I appreciate your positive feedback and support! Congrats on your LO!
