Re: How much spending $ would you give your 5.5 y/o for Disney

  • Maybe $20/day??  Everything is so expensive there.  I would let them know that they can have $100 for the week and when it's gone, it's gone.  So they can either spend like $20/day or they can spend it all at once.  Up to them.

Are you going to be with the 5 yr old?  or are you giving spending money because they are going with someone else?

  • Will you not be there to advise his souvenier shopping?  And I am assuming snacks, mickey mouse ice cream, etc. is not needed to come out of this.  I think if it was me and my parents were taking him without me I would send him with $100.  That stuff is expensive.  I think an ears hat is over $30 these days.

If I was going to be there I wouldn't give him any money, I would just help him shop.

This, I'm all about teaching children responsibility with money but it's Disney.

  • When we went I didn't give my kids any money.  I was there the whole time so we just shopped together at the souvenir stores.
  • I'd probably only let my kid get one or two souvenirs so, $50. I don't think there would be a need for a bunch of souvenirs? Maybe an extra $25 as back up.
  • I guess I'm a mean mommy: I've made Muffin do chores to earn spending money for Disney. She's made about $50 and has been given another $50 in gift cards. Last trip, we did the same thing; she had $100 and could spend it however she wanted. She made very good purchases, including Minnie flip flops and a princess purse she still uses. We pay for all food (including snacks), a tshirt and mouse ears. Otherwise, it's all her. She will be 6 in 3 weeks.

    I think that's great actually!

And I can't get over reading a sentence in which you seriously type out her name as Muffin!  LOL

I love this idea!  When we went, my kids got 0, but they were younger.  I bought them the cheapest light up toy I could find for the parade and bought them meals, that was it.

  • I have a psycho in my past (a real, actual crazy person) so I only refer to DD online as Muffin. I just don't even think twice about it.

I have some Facebook friends who literally know her as only that. :)

  • We always make a deal before we go. She does chores and saves her b-day money or what ever she has to spend on the things she wants. But we agree ahead of time on what we will buy her as a gift also. She always wants a new princess dress, and we buy that. She understands that she will get one only, and she can't fight with us for extras. Given that those dresses are at least 60.00, it's not like we are cheap!
  • I told my two they could have two items each plus I would get them ears. They did good w/it and took time to make their choices. They still wanted an additional item each so we bought them and hid them to give as a gift later. We did do BBB also.

  • My friend makes an annual 2 week-long trip to Disney with her 7 & 4 yo.  It's their big splurge vacation.  She gives each child a pre-paid giftcard (I am uncertain of the amount, but I'd guess $100.00+ per kid).  This does not include snacks, as they buy a meal plan.  When they use up the card, it's gone.  They can also use birthday, chore $ etc. to add to the balance before they leave.  She says it works great, eliminates begging for additional $, & teaches budgeting.  She also looks at the online souvenir shop at Disney.com with her kids ahead of time so they can get an idea of what they might buy or if they need to save for a big item.  I'd consider her the guru of all things Disney.  HTH.

  • $20 per day sounds like a good amount to me as well. We always buy some souvenirs to give the kids after we're back home (we usually put them into stockings but our next trip will probably be after Christmas so that won't work) but it would be a good way to teach them how to budget their money. The plush run $12-25 each, ears are around $15 or so, pins run $7-20, light up toys are around $20, a shirt runs $15-25.
