peeing in the bathtub

Just curious - moms of girls, how do you know? When I was giving DD a bath last night I thought to myself, "wow, she has never peed in the bathtub!" and then I thought, "Well wait a minute. Would I even notice if she did?" And that got me a little worried that maybe she *has* peed in the tub and I just didn't even notice and continued to bathe her...

Our baby tub is dark blue, so I can't tell what color the water is. And DD doesn't have an "I'm peeing now" face that I would recognize. So how do you know? Or do you just live in ignorant bliss like me?

Re: peeing in the bathtub

  • Urine is sterile.  If your kid pees in the tub, it's NBD.

  • eh, pee is the least of my worries. but it's not a big deal since it is sterile.

  • LOL DD pees in the tub pretty much everytime she gets a bath...I just wash her face and ears first so that it's pee free water for that - like PP said pee is sterile!

Same issue with boys.  But like Iris said it's not a big deal.  Poop is the bacteria they have already had in their system, so it's more of a big deal for you or others in the tub than it is for them since their body has already been exposed to it.

That is true but if the bacteria from your bowels get into other body parts, they can cause infections.  E.coli, which naturally occurs in your gut, is a leading cause of UTI for example.

  • I knew urine is sterile, but I guess the thought of washing her body with diluted urine is a little... weird. But like I said, it's possible I do it every bath and just don't know it, so oh well. I just didn't know if any of you actually noticed when it happens and then maybe even *do* something about it. :-)

This might be taking it to the extreme but I can't help thinking, so if pee is sterile and it's NBD, I shouldn't worry about a public pool with lots of kids peeing in there???

    I don't.  I like swimming too much.

  • Do you really think .5-1oz of pee in a tub full of water is a big deal? I guess you'll never take him swimming either...especially not a public pool. Imagine someone else's kid peeing in the water your LO is swimming in?! Oh the horror!

Hmm Are you talking to me? Because I distinctly remember starting off my post with "just curious, how do you know if LO pees in the tub" and not "ZOMG, I think LO's pee touched my skin!!!11!!"

And while I think the idea of cleaning a body with water that has urine in it (however diluted) is a little weird, that's partially a personal quirk. I also don't bathe when I'm dirty because I don't like the idea of laying around in the dirt I just washed off my body. If I want a bath and am dirty, then I first take a quick shower. So, yeah, I'm certainly not freaking out about the urine in the bathwater, but I also can't say I'm like "yeah, cool! My kid pees in the water when I'm bathing her." I was just wondering whether I was the only one who never noticed their kid peeing in the tub and also whether moms who did notice actually did something about it.
