Sodium Phosphate

Our LO has to have Sodium Phosphate 3 times a day orally. All her other meds and vitamins we can mix in her milk but because the SP binds w/ calcium it has to be taken inbetween feeds. It tastes horrible (I finally tasted a bit to see how bad it was). I can tell she hates it and on more than one occassion it has made her puke.  We get blood work done again in a week and I'm hoping they discontinue it.

Has anyone else had to give their little one sodium phos? How long were they on it for?  Any special tricks to make it less icky? I feel horrible every time I have to wake her up to give it to her and just hope that it isn't for much longer :(

Re: Sodium Phosphate

  • I haven't heard of it, what is it for?  is it thin? if so, you can give it to her directly in a nipple of a bottle and she may suck it down really quickly..that's what we did with Andrew's prilosec, which also cannot be given w/ food. (prilosec doesn't taste bad, though.)

Can you get it flavored?  or maybe ask your doctor or pharmacy if you can self-flavor it with something? Maybe vanila? I have NO clue if you can, I don't know anything about sodium phosphate, but I would call and ask.

We were giving a med to Elliott the other day, he kept gagging, we called the pharmacy and they put a lot of extra flavor in it.  It helped.
