Infertility

Male Infertility

Hey Y'all,

This is my first post. I have been a long time reader but finally got some official news today that brought my world to a hault.  My husband and I have been TTC for a year now and finally started getting test done a couple weeks ago. My DH has had some health problems in the past couple year. He has Crohn's Disease and during one of his colonoscopy?s they found a carcinoid tumor in his small intestines(we found this news out 2 weeks after our wedding) and 2 weeks later he was at the hospital having 18 inches of his intestines removed.

Here we are now. I know I ovulate so the doctor wanted to do some blood work and check the basics and in the meantime have DH do a semen analysis. We both expected things to possibly not be great since he has had some health issues but unfortunately it was way worse than we could have imagined. He has severe hypomotility and the best treatment recommended is IVF/ICSI & the clinic impression stated Severely Abnormal. At his point we are redoing the semen analysis in a couple weeks and if we confirm the results have to start making some tough decisions.

Below are the results and I wanted to see if anyone can give me any insight into how bad this really is? from what I have read it is pretty bad. Thanks!

Concentration 11 Million

Rapid Motlitiy 12%

Slow Motility 12%

Total Motility 24%

Round Cells <1%

Normal Morphology 3%

Total Normal Progressive Sperm 0.15 Million

Re: Male Infertility

  • Wish I could be of help, so sorry that you are having to go through this:( My husband's SA came back showing no sperm, so we are going to see a urologist, so that maybe an option.
TTC: December 2010 May-July Clomid-unmonitored (I know, dumb) Ocotober-referred to RE November-RE appointment dx: PCOS December-iui#1cancelled due to DH SA- NO SPERM DH urologist app: b/w was normal APPOINTMENT January 19 for sperm aspiration/biopsy to check for obstruction Praying that 2012 is our year:)
  • My DH has severe MFI with 0 "normal sperm."  But, according to our RE, as long as they contain genetic material--there's still a chance.  As you are considering IVF/ICSI, you don't really have to worry about the sperm being mobile or motile.  They'll put the sperm right in the egg.  After our first cycle, we wound up with 5 fertilized eggs!

     Good luck!

  • Thanks ladies! It's comforting just to be in touch with people who are experiencing the same thing or something similar.

Best of luck to you both!!

  • My husband was dx with 3% normal morphology and we are doing IVF/ICSI in Feb.   MFI is more common than you realize and it doesn't have the final say in your ability to conceive.   Good luck!
  • So sorry you two are going through this. My DH and I having been trying for over a year. SA came back with "no viable sperm". We have our first appt today with a infertility specialist. We are very nervous yet trying to be hopeful.

Also, we found out this weekend my DH sister is pregnant...again! Lots of tears this past weekend for us, it is become very hard for us to tolerate the news of others around us getting pregnant.

Lots of prayers coming your way :)
