Cerclage and dilation

I went in to have my scheduled removal of my cerclage today and was already dilated 2 cm (didn't even know you could dilate with it in).  Anyways my doctor decided to leave in my cerclage for one more week just in case.  Since I am already dilated with the cerclage in, I am wondering how long it will be after it is taken out before I go into labor.  Anyone have any experience with this?  I know it's different for everyone, but just trying to get an idea of what to expect.

Re: Cerclage and dilation

  • I have no personal experience but I asked my doctor this and he said that it could be I get sent home after removal and come back the same night to have the baby or he stays in till 39 weeks. He said that when the babies are bigger the hips tend to hold them in easier than when the babies are small, it's easier for them to come out. I have read that people dialate to a 3 right away when it's removed, and have their baby the same day but I have heard women dialate right after but go to 40 weeks. I think it's different for everyone.

  • I refused internals until 40 weeks w/DS and at 40 weeks was 3-4 cm, then 40 weeks 5 days I was a good 4 cm and went into labor that night.  Cerclage was removed at 35w6d and he didn't check/tell me I was dialated.  W/DD it was removed around the same time 36 weeks...I was not dialated at all at my last appt 39w6d and delivered on my due date at 40 weeks.

  • There just really isn't any way to know.  You are more likely to go more quickly because you are already dilating, but as you know, you can walk around with early dilation for weeks before anything happens.  I had a friend (no cerclage, but lots of PTL, 17p, total bedrest, etc) who struggled to get past 30 weeks, was allowed off bedrest at 35 and eventually had to be induced at 41w3d.  It's so weird how things work out sometimes.

  • I went right to 3 cm after my cerclage was removed....and a week later I was at 4.5cm. The OB didn't expect me to make my next appointment and gave us instructions for delivery at home in case we didn't make it. But the next week I was back at the office at 5cm. That day my water had "sprung a leak" and they started pitocin to move things along. DS was high, in transverse position and distressed and I wound up having a c-section.

All of that is to say that you could still be pregnant 2 weeks after the cerclage is removed. I pretty much thought he was going to fall out but he had other plans.

  • I got my cerc when I was 2cm and was there again after it was removed (15 wks later). I had my twins four days later after I went to five and baby's foot emerged into the birth canal. Best of luck.
