Names... (CP fun included)

I posted a while ago about having second thoughts about the name we picked out (Laura). It's still been bugging me, which to me, means it might not be the right name. DH is soooo attached to the name, though, he refuses to even entertain the idea of changing it.

I'm very drawn to "vintage" names, like Celeste, Eloise, Frances, etc. DH likes more common, though traditional names, like Catherine, Elisabeth, and Charlotte. We settled on Laura because it met one of my needs (it's not super-popular), but it just isn't doing it for me lately.

So one of the names I've been really drawn to lately is Loretta, which was my grandmother's name. This is actually the only reason that I'm still kinda okay with Laura, but the more I think about it, the more I like Loretta over Laura. Whenever I bring this up, though, DH seems all hurt, because he's been calling LO Laura for a few months now. He also thinks LO will be teased if her name is "weird," which he thinks this is.

Oh, and DH likes to lurk occassionally, so if you're reading this, hi honey - hope I summed up your opinions accurately :)

  • While I personally like Laura Rose better I don't think you should "settle" for a name just because your H is already attached. I think that you both need to find a name that BOTH of you love even if its not one of the names that you have already chosen.

I do however see your H's point because I have been calling our son by his name since we found out he was a he and it would completely throw me (as well as DD) for a loop if we were to change now.

  • "Lora" (pronounced the same as 'Laura' in most cases!) would be a perfectly good nickname for Loretta... just sayin'. ;)

  • I like Loretta.   Especially since it was your Grandmother's name.  I love my Grandma's but their names aren't so great.  Otherwise I would have snatched their names up!

  • I LOVE Loretta! I know a million Lauras, but Loretta is so old fashioned and pretty...

    And I love Loretta Lynn.Cool

  • I can't vote on this because my only answer is that if Laura doesn't feel right don't use it. Whether or not Loretta is the right name for you I don't know.  It seems like you might just be using it because it's close enough.

PS.  I just suggested changing the middle name to another name on our short list and DH's head was spinning but he went w/ it.  So I know how you feel.
