WWYD? camping and cedar fever

we have been talking about camping with the girls for a few weeks now (some of you may remember my post asking for tips last week). we decided we would try to go this weekend, but are now second guessing ourselves again. ruby and i have been suffering big time from cedar fever. we went to the pedi and have been trying some different med combos for rubes, without any nighttime relief for my sweet girl. she's up most nights at least twice b/c of coughing and congestion. we end up doing some steam, let her have a cough drop, and prop her back up in bed until she falls asleep. right now im waiting to hear back from the nurse about ordering a prescription nose spray for her. her nose isnt running today as bad as earlier in the week, so im hoping that the meds are working a bit.

so, would you take her camping this weekend for a one night trip? i'm worried about being outside for such a long amount of time. im also worried about her coughing at night in our little tent. on the other hand, she is really looking forward to going, and the pollen count is predicted to go down this weekend (from very high to medium according to the weather.com allergy forecast).

Re: WWYD? camping and cedar fever

  • I was a huge cedar sufferer and I know I would have been miserable being outside for a night, even if the pollen level was at medium.  I am also asthmatic, though, so that would have made my decision for me.  I hope you both get some relief soon!

  • I would skip it.  (You're not mean for considering it, though.)  I go outside for a hour and I'm kicking myself for hours to come later.  I can't even begin to imagine how uncomfortable you & Rubes would be after spending 24+ hours outside.

ETA: and a lower pollen count over the weekend wouldn't really be enough to change my mind.  her allergies are already happening and her sinuses are already reacting/inflamed.  it would take about a week of low pollen counts before you would really notice a difference.

you're a wise woman, mmt. that's a really good point about her already being inflamed. i've been talking about it with d and im sure we arent going to go now. i'm just so sad to have to tell her no and bummed myself that we arent having our super fun family camping trip.

any ideas for something else fun to do? blah.

  • I wouldn't but won't vote that you're a mean momma. :) There's a chance that while you are out there, you will both seem fine, but the second you're back in the car or back home, you will be so incredibly miserable. At least that's how I work-- I'm always fine outdoors with cedar, oddly enough, but miserable once back inside. And my cedar fever is beyond ridiculous.
We have so much time, and so little to do! Strike that, reverse it.

Indoor camping? Y'all could go out back and use your fire pit thing to make s'mores, but come back in and set up your tent in the family room. Let Rubes have a flashlight, tell stories, sleep in your sleeping bags, etc.

i suggested camping at home, and david told me i was lame. i think he's lame. i might just set it up and tell him to go be a boring dad in his big bed by himself.

  • Aww, poor kid! Allergies are the worst. Mine have been killing me this season.

If your DH is being totally lame about your awesome camp at home idea, I think you should take Ruby and have a ladies night downtown. Eat dinner somewhere fancy - or have tea! Do they do tea anywhere here? Maybe get your nails done...

  • I would skip it too (although I don't think you're a mean mama).  Could you set your tent up inside and have a sleepover indoors?  You could possibly still do some fun "camping" stuff like maybe make hot dogs, have microwave smores, maybe read some fun stories in your tent.

Hope you all feel better soon.

I think this is a great idea.  D is being a dummy.

And sorry for the not good news.  I escape to Houston frequently during cedar season (I'm actually here now) and it always takes me a good 3-4 days to start feeling better.

  • oooh, what about a hotel room and set up your tent there? if D thinks it's lame at home :)

I love home camping, can you make a fire and cook hotdogs and s'mores at home? :)
