Baby Names

Less than a week and we're still undecided!

My husband and I have less than a week to go and we still have not picked a name for our baby girl. We have narrowed it down to two first names, Dylan and Blakely, but I'm so indecisive with the middle names. Right now our list includes:

Blakely Elizabeth (mom's middle name)

Blakely Grace

Dylan Abigail (my parents second choice for my first name)

Dylan Elizabeth - which for some reason I'm not crazy about

Dylan Paige

Dylan Samantha (my first name)

So far DH and I are leaning towards Dylan Abigail but I kind of feel bad not using a family name, especially since we didn't use any family names for our sons name (Nathan Alexander.) What are your thoughts? Please help us choose a name!

Re: Less than a week and we're still undecided!

  • Honestly, I think of them as boys name. Out of your list, I think Blakely Elizabeth is the best.

    Why not Abigail Dylan?

  • I don't really care for either Blakely or Dylan.

Of your choices Blakely Elizabeth is the best.

This. And I don't see it as a big deal not to use family names. H is named after his Uncle who later left his wife and kids, was told by his new wife he had to cut out all people he knew prior to the marriage including his family and his daughters and did. It's a joke that there's a wicked version and a nice version so it's fine. We see the ex wife and cousins but I've never net the wicked namesake.

Then and now. How did my boy get so big?

  • Honestly, I dislike boys names for girls. If I had to decide from the names you have given, I say Blakely Elizabeth.

  • Perhaps the problem is that you seem confused about your daughter's gender. Dylan and Blakely are boys' names and sound like boys' names.

    This.

  • Honestly, Dylan is a boys name, please do not name your daughter Dylan. I love Blakely Elizabeth!

DH and I know that Dylan and Blakely have traditionally been boy names but those are the two names we love. Dylan is after my best friend who died when we were in high school and I always loved the name for a girl, despite the fact that it is more common for a boy. Blakely is just one of the few names that DH and I were both able to agree on. I get that not everyone likes unisex names or boy names for girls, but we're pretty set on naming our baby girl either Blakely or Dylan...we just have to choose between the two as well as a middle name.

  • I love boy names for girls but this seems a little muddy. You just joined today and you throw about names that this board historically wouldn't like.

The closer my due date approaches (Jan. 12th) the more stressed out I've become about choosing a name, so one of my close friends recommended the site to me yesterday when we met up for lunch. Since I'm new to this site, I'm not too familiar with the types of names people like or dislike in this board...although I am figuring out that apparently people on this board aren't too fond of unisex names for girls lol. I'm sorry if I upset anybody, that was definitely not my intention. These are just the two names that DH and I happen to like...we actually did have some very feminine girl names on our long list but they just didn't seem to fit for us. I guess we like traditional names for boys and trendy/unisex names for girls.

  • Frankly, I think they are both dreadful names for a girl.  If I heard your children were Nathan and Dylan I'd assume you have two sons.  Blakely is slightly more unisex, but still not a fan.

Paige would be a much better choice for a quirky, spunky girl name without being masculine.  And Nathan and Paige sound nice together.

    Paige Samantha

    Paige Abigail

    Paige Elizabeth

I wouldn't worry about not using a family name; there are no rules that you must honor someone. :)

I'm curious why you wouldn't have used Dylan in your son's name then?

Thank you for taking criticism well...most newcomers to this board who get negative feedback end up acting a fool.

While I share the opinion of the majority of the board on disliking boys' names for girls...since you are set on one of the 2, I like Blakely Elizabeth the most of your combinations.

  • Sorry, I should have added that my best friend was a girl named Dylan lol. Dylan was her mom's maiden name and her mom wanted to use the name regardless of the gender. We did consider using Dylan for a boy but we really loved Nathan Alexander and because of knowing a girl named Dylan, I've kind of always pictured the name for a girl.

Thanks so much for the compliment! I totally understand where people are coming from, everyone has different likes and dislikes...I know that it's nothing personal.

  • I prefer Blakely, and I think either MN you have listed works well. Though, I'm a  huge sucker for the meaning behind names... but I still don't think I could get behind Dylan as a girl's name. I would be all for it as a middle name, though!

  • I strongly dislike both fn options, so I'm no help there, but I don't think you need to worry about family names.  Especially since you might go with Dylan, which is a nod to your friend.

  • Blakely?! is that even a name?

and Dylan is a boy name.

so I'd suggest going with some combo of your middle names all of which are quite nice!

  • Your middle names are lovely.  I don't think Blakely or Dylan are lovely, at all.

Elizabeth is the best of your bunch.

Then Dylan is your only option.  Blakely, quite honestly, is awful.  At least Dylan means something to you.  Dylan Grace.

  • I like Blakely Elizabeth.

Before your post, I wasn't a fan of Dylan for a girl. However, after hearing about the meaning of it for you and thinking about it a bit more, I kind of like it. I would choose Dylan Paige out of the two...but I still like Blakely Elizabeth better.

Please don't think that you have to use a family name at all, ever. I especially think that if you're going to use family names, you should use them from the start. I wouldn't want any of my children to feel left out if I used a family name for one and not the other.

  • I would choose Blakely Elizabeth. And don't stress out over using/not using a family name. I think it's silly to do so just for the sake of it. If there is a name you love or soomeone you want to honor, than use it. But don't use one because you feel you have to.

  • I?m really sorry for your loss.  I?d choose Blakely Elizabeth or Dylan Abigail.  Best of luck in narrowing it down!
