Development

I keep trying to figure out where my daughter is developmentally and it's so confusing. She is doing way more than a 2 week old would but doesn't act like a three month old either. I don't know why but I'm desperate to be able to label her, I think I'm trying to normalize the situation so I can best help her. Are your babies closer to adjusted or actual age with development?

Re: Development

  • Emmeline is only 3 weeks adjusted and was rolling over yesterday, so I'd say she's more on her actual age for that.  Other things, such as interacting with toys, smiling, etc. haven't come yet, so I assume she's going more on adjusted age for that.

  • My DD is 3 months old but born 8 weeks early.  I don't even worry with the adjusted age (and my ped has never mentioned doing that kind of schedule).  She rolled herself over the week she came home from the NICU yet still won't grasp rattles.  However, that may be just how she is, independent of her age issues.  Even "normal" babies develop at such different rates it's hard to label them, not to mention frustrating for parents.  If your baby were very delayed at something important I bet you would notice.

  • adjusted age for both my 26-weeker and 35-weeker.
  • DD has always been more or less around her adjusted age for most things. I think it all depends on your baby - dont be in such a hurry to "label" her - she will learn at her own pace. Do you have a developmental evaluation scheduled? ours was a good starting point for me to judge her development.
