When did your babies Apnea Issues go away?

My twins are in the NICU now for 2 weeks and were born at 32 weeks 5 days. They both are having apnea issues. One of them has atleast one spell a day. I'm getting so discouraged that they're never going to go away.

For those of you who have been through this w/ your LO, when did it go away by and how long after did they release them from the NICU??

  • Mine still do and they are 40 weeks today.  Sad  I think my case is extreme though.  From what the doctors have said, they usually go away by 38 weeks.  Mine have bad reflux so that is a factor in their events.  I hope they go away soon for you.  I know how frustrating it is!!

  • Henry had his last one with sleep needing interventionat 34w2d, we were on a 5d count down and took him home at 35w. He still had them with feeds and brief self resolved ones with sleep, but we felt comfortable dealing with those at home... diff NICUs have diff policies about what "counts." They are so frustrating... hang in there!

  • My son had multiple brady episodes a day until he came home at 36.5 weeks.  He was sent home on an apnea monitor.  The first month he was home, he had 38 apnea or brady episodes.  They didn't fully resolve until he was 4 months adjusted.  Different NICUs have different policies about whether or not you need to be on a monitor if your child is having self-resolved episodes.

  • Please don't be too discouraged. They are still very young! My DD was born at 28 weeks (is now 34w1d) and although she has never really had "apnea" spells, she has a lot of desats. Her respiratory rate stays fine, but her sat drops all the time, esp during feeding.

I can say this, which may or may not be midly encouraging to you. My DD had a fast heart rate pretty much all the time. She'd be sound asleep and her HR would be 170s, 180... all the other babies would be in the 130s, 140s...  and then this week, all of the sudden, hers just started slowing down & becoming more normal... I mentioned it to her primary nurse and she said she's simply growing up, and growing out of it. So, perhaps your girls (who are BEAUTIFUL by the way! LOVE that photo!) just need to get bigger. I know, I hate that answer too, but maybe its true in this situation!

Best of luck to you! :)

  • I'm sorry - I know how frustrating it is. Every baby is different so there's no way to gauge how long it will be...maybe tomorrow, maybe not for a few months. We were in NICU for two months then home on the monitor for four months. He was mainly bradying his butt off but there were A's thrown in there for fun, too! It doesn't feel like it now, but it will pass.
  • DS last apnea episode occured when he was 5mths old, the one before that was a month earlier. He had really bad reflux and that was what caused the apnea. I can safely say his episodes stopped at 4-5mths old. This is what the Drs told me and they were right.
