Re: BLW moms- intro meats

  • we just give her strips of meat. Steak is by far her favorite food. She started out just sucking on it (sucked it down to beef jerky almost!) but now she can kind of rip pieces off with her bottom teeth (we make sure to cut against the grain so it comes apart pretty easily in her mouth)

I've also given her strips of chicken and she did was able to get pieces of that apart in her mouth pretty easily too, but that was when she had only been at it a couple of days and I don't think she swallowed any.

  • I gave her a stick shape of baked chicken- she sucked it for awhile, then threw it.

I also tried a squarish shape of beef from a stew (I rinsed it first)- she wouldn't even open her mouth for that one.

I also (bad mom) let her chew on a meatball at Ikea the other day- she LOVED it, but wouldn't hold it-- pulled my hand to hold it up to her mouth for her and then gummed the heck out of it.

  • We are just starting to experiment with BLW and we gave him a chunk of ham and he was able to pick it up and chew off pieces of it.  It was pretty tender though so we had to do a mouth sweep a couple times because I got nervous when a huge chunk came off.

  • We did turkey meatballs and I was thinking today of trying basically a hamburger patty so he could try ground beef. :) The meatballs were a big hit and I just used panko as a binder and no egg or spices - I'm sure you could use regular bread crumbs too, Ev just has MSPI and there was milk in the ingredients.

We've also done strips of turkey, chicken, and ham, as well as little chicken drumsticks All of them went over well but the drumsticks were definitely the easiest for him to grab himself. I made a whole package (baked and then removed the skin) and put the leftovers in the freezer, that way on days we're eating something that isn't baby friendly I can just take one out and microwave it for him.

Basically my method at this point is to make a baby friendly portion of whatever meat we're having, but I don't worry about the texture or pieces. He's had no real choking issues so I just give him the food however we're making it. :)

  • Max is a total carnivore! He really likes liver sausage on toast for lunch and had his first rib tonight. He didn't get tons of meat off, but he sure tried his best! Pretty much any meat we have for dinner, he gets to try. He hasn't turned any down yet. :)

  • Isla eats meat like crazy!  Her favorites have been steak, salmon, and tilapia (if you consider fish meat.)  We cut it against the grain for beef, chicken and pork and she eats it pretty well.  She has had ground beef but isn't really interested in it because it just crumbles.  I always give it to her in strips and she eventually turns them into pieces.  I am shocked as to how much of it she actually eats!  She loves to 'chipmonk' with the meats too, it is hilarious!
