Just thought I'd throw this tidbit of info out there for those interested:
The book I have says steaming apples and pears with the skin on is the best way to preserve nutrients, so that is what I do (cut them in quarters & cut off the seeds/core, steam, then let them cool and scoop out the fruit).
Also, any time you can use the water from steamed veggies/fruits, it's good to add that to the purees to maintain nutrients. The pears are naturally very watery, so they don't need added water to puree. BUT, last night I pureed chicken for the first time in addition to my pears, and I used the pear water to make the chicken puree smooth. I figured I might as well put it to use instead of just using plain water for the chicken!
Re: S/O steaming apples and pears: a PSA
I got DH involved...He baked a chicken breast (along with a little water, since we didn't use marinade of any kind) then cut it up and refrigerated the tiny pieces. Wholesomebabyfood.com recommends using COLD pieces. Then I threw them into my magic bullet and made very fine bits, then kept adding the pear water until it was smooth enough. Very easy, but it's pretty gross seeing liquefied chicken in ice cube trays, lol.
Just curious, but when are you starting the chicken? Our pedi didn't mention anything about meat yet, but I'm curious to see what others are doing.
thanks for the tip.
I actually just made pears tonight but the recipe I got said to peel then bake. I knew I should have left the skin on. Oh well next time
My pedi told me to go ahead and start meats now in order to give DS more calories, and also for added iron.
