does your 3yo still nap?

It seems my daughter is fighting naps...she is napping less and less now.  Most days she does not nap she ends up super cranky/bratty by dinner time.  There is soooo much whining and crying and screaming and not listening.  Anyone else experience this when they started dropping naps???

Re: does your 3yo still nap?

  • I ditched naps by 2.5 because I got tired of the fight (and it was too much trouble to deal with with a newborn).  We made bedtime earlier and that solved the evening whining.

  • DS dropped his naps shortly after he turned 2.It was a difficult, grumpy transition, but for the most part we left his bedtime alone and he's adjusted well. He still gets "quiet" time while DD naps.

  • He still naps 1 - 2 hours.  He went through a not napping phase but I was very consistant for about 4 days and he got back in the nap cycle again.  There maybe a rare time when he doesn't nap and I will take him for a drive and he usaully conks out, for 20 -45 min which makes him not be such a terror.

  • No naps here. I try to get her to do quiet time with an iPad in bed and sometimes, like 25% of the time, she falls asleep, but it's rare.
  • she does them at school, but she rarely does them at home on weekends.  If she really needs a nap, I'll take a drive and she'll conk out for an hour or so.  Last weekend, I actually got her to take a nap at home, in bed for 2.5 hours - it was glorious and no crying or tears.

  • It seems to vary greatly from child to child. My first son is 4.5 and can still nap 3-4 hours a day occasionally! My second son is 19 months and I could see him trying to give up naps after his second birthday. :( I wish all children could be fantastic nappers. LOL

  • Monday through Friday at daycare he naps for about 90 minutes.  They have a mandatory quiet time. On the weekends at home, forget it.  He absolutely refuses and puts up such a fight, no one rests and it's not worth trying,

  • At daycare she naps 90% of the time still. At home she rarely naps.

  • My daughter gave up weekend naps (still naps at daycare) when she was 3, so we instilled mandatory quiet time--we still call it naptime, but she's allowed to play quietly in her room as long as she stays in her room for a couple of hours. On days when there's a lot going on, we insist she take one, but only when she's in obvious need of it. Even if she's not sleeping, having quiet play time can still be beneficial.

  • He gave them up around 2 years, 4 months.  BOOOOO!  He pretty much asks to go to bed at 7 he is so tired, but he functions well without the nap.

  • At almost 4, he still takes a 2ish hour nap a day.  If he doesn't nap, he's a mess by dinner time.  Somedays he doesn't nap but he lays quietly in his bed with books or a quiet toy for 2ish hours.

  • Yes for 1.5-2 hours a day. He can go without it if we have something to do, but it takes 4-5 days to get back to a happy boy again!

  • He began dropping them around 3.5 but if it did nap after 3.5 years, it was at or after 3pm and interfered with bedtime.   He was also a mess in the evenings if he didn't nap but up late if he did nap, damned if you do and damned if you don't.  He rarely naps now (4.25 years) esp at home.  They have quiet time at daycare and sometimes he sleeps.  He never sleeps at home and I prefer that because he goes to bed easily.

  • DS started dropping his naps at age 3.  he would only nap a few times a week and by age 3.5 he was only napping maybe once a week.  He still has naptime at daycare and at home we do quiet time but he rarely naps.  When he first started dropping his naps he was a mess by dinner time.  We had to move up his bedtime and he was asleep instantly and would sleep the entire night.  He also began sleeping a little longer at night.
  • About three months ago DD started fighting her naps hard core.  She would fight and fight not to nap and finally fall asleep way late (like 3 or 4 pm) and then bedtime would be a fight all over again.  I gave in last week and she is no longer napping.  She is required to play quietly in her room for one hour, though.  Bedtime is back to being a breeze.  She did actually ask to take a nap one day earlier this week and I was happy to oblige because if she is tired enough to actually ask for a nap she obviously needs one!

ETA:  She will be 4 in March.

  • DD is staring to fight the naps. She just turned 3 though so I'd rather she keep them up a bit longer. I'd say we average a nap 4/7 days. Even when she's not tired (and she tells me so) I still have her stay in her bed and she can "read" or just lay there. I think "quiet time" is a very great thing to enforce so if your LO is really fighting it then maybe try the quiet time so any other LO's can nap if they still want to.Good luck!

I have a feeling my desire to force the nap will disappear once the new LO gets here in August.

  • She won't nap at home unless she's just completely exhausted.  Like last week she had a friend over and they ran around in pure craziness for 4hrs straight, and after her friend left she conked out for a solid 2 hrs.  I was shocked.  But during the week at school she naps every day, typically 1.5hrs.

  • all my boys still nap... DS1 is going to be 5 in march and he almost always takes at least an hour nap.  When i taught K most of the kids still napped for an hour, too.

I'm a nap lover myself- it seems my kids take after me with that. :) The twins nap 2-3 hours a day at 2.5yo, too.

I used to be Goldie_locks_5 but the new nest is so screwed up that I was forced to start over.

  • My twins haven't napped since they were 2 1/2. That is when we put them in toddler beds and naps went away. At first I was upset, but then once I got used to it they were going to bed so much earlier (giving me my nights back) and I didn't have to fight them everyday to take the nap.

On occasions when I need them to nap because we have a family function that I want them awake for at night, I will make them nap, but this requires me laying down with them in their room to start. I have to stay with them until they settle down and fall asleep, usually like 20 min. and then they nap for about 1 1/2 - 2 hours. This happens maybe 1x every 2 months.

  • DS dropped a nap at 3.5, bedtime was becoming such a struggle.  Once he dropped the nap he was able to go to bed at a resonable time without fussing. Everyonce in a while he'll take a 2 hour nap during the day, and if we are in the car for more than 10 minutes between the hours of 2-5 he'll nap :)

  • Mine have only been 3 for a few days but so far, they are still napping a good 2-3 hrs. They have been taking a while to fall asleep at night though so I think I need to adjust their schedule a bit.

  • DD will be 3 in a week and still naps 1.5 - 2 hours a day. It probably has to do with the daycare schedule, but she's always been pretty good about naps
