pink eye?

I've never had it, don't know much about it...my only understanding is that it is highly congtagious.

My cube neighbor came in today looking like someone punched her in the side of the head.  She got an appointment with her doc.  Our boss just emailed us that she does indeed have pinkeye.  But that it is the viral form, not the bacteria form.  I did not raelize there were two different versions of this - so does this mean it is not contagious?  The only thing I know is that I do NOT want Stella getting it.

Re: pink eye?

  • I know there are two ways but i'm pretty sure they are both highly contagious.

Ahh well...at least we are coming up on a weekend.  This is something that clears up relatively quickly, right?

  • I don't really know. I think I had it once when I was little but I don't remember how long for. I think it's a few days to a week or so? hahaha. Wow that was vague.

  • I actually have it right now, lol!! Both forms are very contagious, but only if you're not careful about it. As long as you're washing your hands often and properly you should be fine. Also, DO NOT touch your eyes/face without washing your hands first. Once on antibiotics for 24hrs, it's considered no longer contagious. I hope you don't get it (fingers crossed). Happy handwashing!! :-)

  • HI eye doctor here :)

Yes, both forms are contagious.  Make sure your hands are thoroughly washed if you have to touch your face or your eyes.  Both forms usually resolve within 1-2 weeks on its own.  The bacterial form can be treated with antibiotics, but not the viral form.  You just have to let that one ride out on its own.  We usually advise using an over the counter artificial tear drop if you have the viral form to speed up the healing. Hope that helps :)
