Potty Training

3 yo DD refuses to go on potty

My DD just turned 3 a few weeks ago and absolutely refuses to go on the potty. We have tried everything from rewards, potty chart, her favorite character big girl undies, not allowing her to have a favorite treat or watch a special show unless she goes on the potty, Got a special baby doll and the elmo potty doll to show her, etc. Yet, she refuses to go. She whines when we just try to take her to the potty to sit on it. When we put her in underwear, she either tries to hold it until we put a diaper on her at nap time, or she ends up peeing through her clothes. And she doesn't seem to care when she pees through either. She doesn't come and tell us, just continues to do whatever she's doing until I happen to discover it. I'm at a loss for what to do. I know she understands the concept but she is extremely stubborn and just doesn't want to do it. Should I give it a break and try again in a few weeks? Is there something else I can try?

Re: 3 yo DD refuses to go on potty

  • I'm sorry to hear about what you are going through. I don't really have much experience with PTing. But the consistent thing I've heard is that a child will do it when they are ready. She might just be a late bloomer. I would imagine that if she sees other children doing it, that might help. Is she is in daycare or a playgroup at all where she is exposed to other kids using the potty?

  • I was in the same boat until last week.  I took her pull ups away for good (other than bedtime).  At first she screamed at me (literally) to put her diaper back on.  But I refused and made her wear underwear (she used to be the same way, underwear didn't matter to her)  At first she just pooped and peed in her underwear but I refused to give her her pull up back (it takes a lot of patience, and cooperation from relatives or daycare providers who watch her) finally after about a day she started peeing in the potty.  Now she has gone days without peeing in her pants.  We are working on the poop thing, but we have made progress.
  • I'm in the exact same boat. Today he pooped and peed at nap in his diaper and has held it otherwise. He's ON the potty and will sit but won't go. I've given him a ton of liquids and put the potty in the living room at his request. He asked me to help him and said he didn't know how when i asked him to pee. I can't really help...we've done EVERYTHING to show him. I know he can poop in there since he did it once. He just outright refuses to pee....

Good luck to you..i'm doing training pants all day except nap and bed. I figure he has to go eventually.
