we currently have a leather couch ordered....but I keep going back and forth between if a leather couch is a smart choice, or if we'd be better off with fabric with kids. Plus its in the basement which tends to be cooler, so maybe fabric would be more comfortable for that initial plop down on the couch??
Sooo what kind of couch do you have???

Re: Couch--leather or fabric?
We have a fabric couch upstairs (gets used most by default - we aren't often in the basement. We have leather in the basement).
At any rate, our dog(s) have done more damage to the couch than the kids. But our fabric couch has definitely seen better days (it's almost 9 years old though). We recently bought a slipcover for it, it was getting that bad. The white stuff was starting to pull through. There were a couple of rips (from Coach diving at the front window (couch under front window) when the garbage truck came.
Our leather couches are still in awesome shape. BUT they only get used (most times) in the winter. We have a woodstove down there so our basement is not usually cold. During the summer months, it's freezing down there but we are hardly down there (outside until bedtime).
Yea, so basically, I'm no help. Either can get ruined. Equally, either can withstand time. It's a toss up!
I think you can go either way. If you go with fabric, just make sure it's something durable.
When we were looking for a couch a few years ago we were set on leather - but we could not find one that we both really liked. We did like this one though...it's half leather/half fabric. The couch has had been through a lot (puke, wine, pee)...and it still looks awesome.
We saw some couches similar to that one, camrude.
Ok....I'll probably stick with the leather. Which is good..because I don't think I can handle going to the freaking furniture store one more time.

I would be a little concerned about how comfortable leather would be in a basement.
We have a fabric couch. I just looked at the label and it said its cotton felt? Whatever it is, it has stood up to a lot of abuse and use. It still looks brand new and we've had it 3 1/2 years (its still newish, I guess). I think with leather or fabric, you get what you pay for. Our couch is by Hancock and Moore, which is a top U.S. brand and known for quality.
Sorry if that complicates things for you!
This is the couch (and we got a matching loveseat) that we currently have ordered...we have up until deliver which is the end of the month (we are waiting for carpet to be installed) to change our mind.
My concern would be how the cushions/fill under the leather would wear with that couch (besides the leather in a basement).
CI wouldn't have that concern if the cushions were like this:
Not that the above couch is your taste. I just posted it for the difference in cushions. I would have the same concern if those cushions were covered in fabric.
Is that couch a recliner? It does look comfy.
Leather.
We are actually getting our new leather couch delivered today and I simply could not be more ecstatic about it.
We got beige, and washable, couches/chairs/ottomans, only a few years ago and they are horrible. Even after I wash them, they're still dirty.
This is what we're getting today:
It's from Macys, the Stacey sectional. My friend has it and she has 3 boys and a dog and it looks great. She's had it for years.
Me with my littlest.
It is a recliner..it was one of the few sets that the loveseat didn't have the center console/cup holder crap. There were like 3 or 4 other sets....2 were value produced...aka crap. And one was out of our price range. This one seemed the best of both worlds...decent brand, in our price range.
I like the idea of recliner so that each of us can stretch out without hogging the whole couch/loveseat. But yeah, I'm not in love with the cushions.
GAH! Seriously...between the couch shopping, my DH being anass, and stress over other stuff, I think I'm having a nervous breakdown. I don't want to start over with couch shopping, I don't think I can do it. At this point, I just want to cancel the order and deal with it in a few months. But then we will have no where to sit in the basement.....
I am not going to like the couch we ordered, am I....
I am probably overthinking the whole "leather in the basement" thing. I bet it would be fine!
I think I am just bored!
ETA: I just read your above reply...If you don't love it, don't get it. I have quite a few furniture regrets with this house. I felt pressured to buy furniture when we were moving. I was 9 months pregnant and I just wanted it done. If I had been more patient, I would have saved a ton of $$ and not had any regrets.
winery, I love that...we looked at sectionals too and again, and couldn't decide. The one I loved the most was a loveseat on one side, square corner (DH likes the round ones for some reason, then couch with a chaise at the end. So it almost made a lopsided U shape. DH didn't like it at all.
Exactly this.
We've had our furniture for 8 years and people STILL comment on how new it looks. We had the stain resistant stuff put on it and stuff literally wipes away. No one single stain in 8 years and it's been through a lot. So much more comfortable than leather, IMO.
My leather chair has a hole in it from the first year. Still holds up well though.
Its LazyBoy. I don't know if its a good brand or not, but the frame and reclining mechanism are warranteed for life..the leather is 5 years.
ugh....
I don't love that couch. I just showed it to DH, and he said, "It looks like a man couch." LOL.
Personally, I would not drop a bunch of money on a couch I didn't like or even wasn't sure about. I know you hate to revisit and obviously it's completely up to you, but I would cancel the order and do an executive override to pick a nicer looking couch.

When I saw it, I thought "My husband would love that".
Go ahead and cancel it. If you feel like you made a mistake cancelling it and want it still, then you have your answer. You can always order it, but once it's in your basement, it's there to stay!
Ditto the microfiber. We had a set of leather couches in our main room and moved them to the basement because we hated them. We brought the cheapo microfiber ones up from the basement and they still look great.
The leather was cold, and not cozy at all. The summers they got sticky if the air wasn't on. Plus the kids slid off all the time when they were in their pjs.
