Infertility

bfn

So I tested this morning twice and both came back bfn.  I'm sorta discouraged, everything went really well with this cycle.  My dh and I are thinking it's time to move on from IUI and move to IVF.  All together we have had 3 failed IUIs and I'm not sure how much more we can deal with.  My question to everyone is when did you make the switch from IUI to IVF?  I'm lucky to still be young (almost 30) and nothing but pcos is wrong with me.  We are kinda put off with the price of IVF but since we have already had all the diagnosis testing done that should cut some money out of it.  I'm just getting discouraged with the IUI.  Any suggestions?

Re: bfn

  • I am so sorry to hear about your bfn. Unfortunately, DH and I are not at that stage yet, but I would think in your shoes I would make the move to IVF. Price worries me as well about that, so I'm actually starting to save and shop around for grants, as well. Best advice I can give is to follow your heart. Good Luck with whatever decision you make!

  • I have no advice since we had to go straight to IVF, but just wanted to say sorry. Yes, the price is high, but hopefully you'll find a way to get the money together.  Even though our first try failed, and I think often about all I could have done with the roughly $12k we spent on it, I still don't regret it.  For us, we had to give it a shot, and we're willing to do it again.  Good luck!

  • I'm so sorry. After our third full IUI cycle, we made the decision to move to IVF. We are unexplained, so there's really no way to know what is going on in there. But, the thing that really pushed us to IVF was the odds. There's really nothing out there that is going to give you the per cycle success rate of IVF. While I am also just shy of 30, my response to meds has worsened and my FSH (while still in range) is rising. We figured, now or never! Best of luck to you in making this decision. We will be here for you whatever you decide!

  • This is such a personal decision. I have taken a long time to get to the point of moving on to IVF. We did 3 medicated cycles last Spring, then took a break to get healthier and try naturally for about 6 months, then went back to the RE. After 2 more failed IUI's we're just done with IUI, mentally and emotionally. The success rates are too low and we were getting so discouraged. We are ready to bring out the big guns, even though we are totally OOP (gulp).

Our decision was also motivated by my age (36) and the fact that we want 2 more children. If I was younger, I might try more IUI's and natural cycles.  Good luck with your decision, and definitely talk to your RE to see what his/her recommendation is.

  • I am so sorry. Big hugs to you.

I only have the option of IVF so I can't advise you on the move from IUI but I want to wish you good luck in whatever you decide. IVF is expensive but it sounds like you would be an excellent candidate for success (especially with your age too!). Do you have any insurance coverage of IVF?

Although IVF is costly, I think the the emotional toll of the whole process is more costly on yourself overall. I say, it will be a short term sacrifice for a long term gain and an excellent investment!! IVF may be the fastest, most efficient way for you to get your little one.

Does your RE's office offer risk sharing? That can help you with cost. Some offices have it where you get money back from your cycle if you don't have success.

    Take care and good luck!

  • sorry about the bfns...  we did 4 IUIs before moving on to IVF, but that was because I got a BFP with IUI#1 (m/c 5w3d).  I am sorry you are having to make this decision, but lots of REs recommend moving on after 3 IUIs... so your thoughts will likely line up with your RE.  Good luck making a decision and moving forward.

  • I'm so sorry about your BFN. They suck! We actually went straight to IVF. At our clinic, the cost of an IUI was about 1/3 of a the cost of an IVF, and we decided with the success rates just to skip straight to IVF. It's definitely a personal decision though and your diagnosis will play more into what your success rates will be with each.

  • We decided that even though it was expensive we would try IVF after 4 IUIs (2 cp).  Our RE said that it was a better option so that we could do the genetic testing and see what is going on.  We felt like it was the most logical step and the best chance for getting a baby. From what I have learned, IUI is a good low cost option but after so many cycles, its best to move on.

This was the same for us.  I think our % of an IUI working was like 8-10% where IVF was around 60%.....and 3 IUIs would be about the cost of one IVF, so we went to IVF without any IUIs.
