Trying to gauge how most would pronouce this name.
Considering it for a middle name (as it is a family name) but I fear it will be not pronouced the right way. For a middle name, maybe it does not matter. ?
I've known two Johanna...although I think it may have been spelled Johannah for at least one. One went by Jo-haun-ah and one went by Jo-Hannah. Both sound pretty IMO.
My husband's family is Dutch and would pronouce it yow haan aa
I don't mind the jo han ah way of saying it... but I actually hate the name joanna and my concern will be that people think that her middle name is pronouced joanna.
That is why i am not sure I would be willing to use it--- however it would mean a lot to my husband.
If I were reading a book with this name as a character I would pronounce it jo-HA-nah because that is my preferred pronunciation of this name. Traditionally, I think it's pronounced yo-HAHN-nah, or something similar.
I like it pronounce yo-haun-ah, jo-haun-ah, and jo-hannah. I do not like it pronounced Joanna.
I go to jo-hannah first, I think.

I knew one girl and it was pronounced Jo-hawn-uh and I knew another and she said it like Jo-han-uh. I can also see it being Yo-hawn-uh. Around here there are people that would be spiteful and just say jo-anna because it's something they're familiar and comfortable with and refuse to learn the correct way to say a person's name.
In the middle name spot, I don't think its that important that people know how to pronounce it. I would instinctively say Joe-Hannah, but I have also known a Joe-haun-uh.
I don't see why anyone would ever say it Joe-Anna. There is an H there.

Which is how it's spelled/pronounced in Sweeney Todd, one of my favorite musicals.
For a middle, I don't think you need to worry too much about pronunciation, since the volume of times she actually has to correct people on it will be much lower than if it were her first name.
Re: How do you pronouce Johanna?
In my experience it depends on the person.
I have run into people who pronounce it Jo-anna and another who prefers Jo- haun-ah.

It's my middle name. It was my grandmas name.
Growing up, my parents always said Jo-hawn-ah. But I heard some people call my gma Jo-han-ah.
I would never think Joanna. Do people think the h is silent or something?
Plus it's a middle name so pronounciation isnt as big a deal.
