Thoughts on using just an initial as a middle name?

I posted last week how DH and I are stuck on a girls name. Our DS is named after both our grandfathers, so I feel somewhat compelled to incorporate a family name into our girl's name. We are having such difficulty that we'll probably end up abandoning the idea altogether. Anway, my maiden name and married last name both end in -er. So if we used my maiden name as a middle name for our girl, it wouldn't flow very well. Is it weird to just use the initial? I don't feel strongly about it either way, but my DH thinks it's stupid.

  • I don't care for that idea.  Sure, maybe it worked for Harry S. Truman, but I don't really think it makes sense.  To me, an initial isn't really incorporating your last name at all.  How often are people really saying all 3 names together?  I'd just use the two -er names.

  • Moneypenny, technically he was Harry S Truman (no abbreviation, no period).

Could you use the first initial and then go from there?  Say if your maiden name starts with an S, use Susan or Stephanie or something.  Or could you use a different form of your last name?  Like if it's Thomas, use Thomasina or soemthing along those lines.

  • Ehhh what's the point then ya know! There's no law that says there HAS to be a middle name or even an initial.

  • I am not a fan of just an initial as the mn.  Also, to the point of how often will the middle name be used...I have a common first and last name so my work email address had to have my middle name too.

OP, I would keep looking. What about Mother or Grandmothers' maiden names or mn?

  • Both my grandfather and my uncle just had A as their middle initial.  It didn't stand for anything (and their initials were AAA).  I think for my grandfather he just had an initial because his mother couldn't think of anything (he went home from the hospital as Baby Boy).  He possibly just carried that on with his son.

Interestingly enough, my dad has a middle name but his sister doesn't.  So they pretty much went all the routes (minus a double middle name) for all the kids in their family.

  • My father has only the letter "A" for a middle name and he said that it is such a hassle.  For paperwork people are constantly questioning him, getting it wrong, and not beliving it's truly just the letter "A".  He hates it.  I would suggest just choosing a name you love and even if the flow isn't great, you're not going to call her by her fn and mn AND ln that often.

  • I guess this is really popular in Amish culture.  I think it would be better to use a name that doesn't flow as well.
  • Sorry, but I'll have to agree with your DH. It's definitely pretty silly.

  • If you want just a middle initial, that's fine. Go for it. I have a friend with no middle name who finds it more of a hassle than my friend with just an initial as her middle name.

Her middle name is the initial Z after her mothers' hispanic maiden name. Her mother did it to please HER mother but wanted her daughter to have an American name. Only once has she received anything offical which listed her middle name as Zee instead of Z
