3rd Trimester

Swelling in the nether regions?

I'm 31 weeks along, and last night I was experiencing (what I would consider extreme) swelling all throughout my labia (TMI?).  Not painful, but very full/tight/tender.  I thought maybe it was just a foot swelling type thing, from being up and about all day.  After laying on the couch for a while, it totally went away.  Midway through the day today, I could feel the swelling returning.  I'm a teacher, so I'm on my feet all day.  I called the Dr. to see if I should come in.  The triage nurse recommended I stay off my feet (not really possible as a teacher) and lay down flat as much as possible.  She also mentioned that if it continues to the point of discomfort that I should be checked...that the Dr. might say that I'm not allowed on my feet.  I guess she meant bedrest?

Has anyone had any experience with this type of swelling?

  • I am a teacher too... My rolley chair was my best friend this time and last time around...

    How is your blood pressure?

  • My blood pressure has always been very low pre-preg, and has been fine at all OB appointments, including last Wednesday.

  • I asked becasue I had pre-e with my DD and it started with some swelling in one foot. My BP was typically low before her and then just started going up.

The swelling with up my legs and into "that" area is kinda why I asked...

I would check in with the doctor just to be sure, especailly if you think bedrest might be the next step. (I went out at 30 weeks and did not have anything planned...)

They also told me to drink a lot of water... well as a teacher you know that is not always easy.

  • I actually had similar swelling around the 30-33 week mark but it hasn't been as bad since. I don't know if that's just a coincidence or not.

I know that blood flow increases to that region which I'm assuming is the cause of the swelling so I wouldn't worry too much about it. If it keeps causing you pain and discomfort I'd mention it at your next appointment.

  • I personally haven't experienced this, but my friend had with both of her pregnancies - she actually has a varicose vein in her vagina, so that is what causes the swelling. If that is what your issue is, supportive undergarments are a good idea - my friend uses a support belt, and I've heard of something called a "fembrace" for similar issues.
