I just wanted to say hello and officially introduce myself. I used to be on the bump under a different screen name (that was my full name), so I am starting new. My DD is almost 2, and I'm due in May with baby #2. I am hoping for a VBAC.
With DD, I went into labor on my own 7 days past my due date. I labored for 24 hours. The nurses checked me and said I was complete. I pushed for 2 hours until baby was within a fingertip of crowning. My OB arrived to deliver her, and he discovered I was only 7cm. I was straight to the OR for me. They had to push her back up into my uterus to get her out. I was on pitocin for about 12 hours, maybe 10, and I had 2 failed epidurals (neither one took).
I have a new OB this time around who is very pro-VBAC and says I have a 60% chance (statistically). I love reading all the success stories on here. I hope to add my own!
Re: Intro
Welcome!
Was there a reason they didn't let you labor longer? How could your baby be nearly crowning if you were only 7 cm? I hope I don't sound like I am giving you the third degree, just trying to understand a little better.
Good questions! They are all ones that I asked myself for a long while. What I've learned is that babies can be pushed out if you're only 7cm - but the risk of severe tearing is great. I supposedly had a posterior cervix at that point, which made it harder for them to determine how dilated I was. I still don't understand how to nurses and a resident could say that I was 10 cm but the OB said I was only 7. How do 3 people get it wrong? My guess is that the c/s was pushed because of liability reasons. Also, I was the OB's 4th c/s of the day, and he arrived at 10:00pm. DD was born at 10:47pm. In hindsight, I would've been more of an advocate for myself. I've also learned since that once you start pushing, you start to swell, so its unlikely that I would've made it to a 10cm. I think OBs are so quick to call for a c/s these days.
I've since switched OBs and practices altogether, and my current OB knows what went down last time. She still thinks I'm a good candidate (DD was sunny side up, and she thinks that caused the posterior cervix).
