Baby Names

Girl Names are rough stuff..

DH and I are newly expecting our first and daydream about names. We've always known for quite some time about our boy names...but girl names are ridiculously hard for us!! I like very vintage/serious names and he likes too many cutesy popular ones. Please please tell me others have had this issue.

Re: Girl Names are rough stuff..

  • Yep, Our two boys seems like no brainers. We just recently figured out our girl name and my husband still doesn't want to make it official since "something better might come up."

  • I have found girl names to be extremely challenging. In your case though I'd consider a name that is vintage and serious with a popular nickname.

    Elizabeth - Ellie

    Penelope - Poppy

    Madeline - Maddie

It can be daddy's special nickname for her.

  • DH and I were in the same boat.  I liked something a little older with some history, his suggestions were Rylie, Kylie, or Jaylynn.  ACK.  It took a long time to bring him around to my side.  We finally both got what we wanted.  I got Penelope and he gets to call her Poppy or Pippa! :)  You will figure it out, and you have lots of time!

  • First of all, congrats on your pregnancy! :)

Second, YES. Girl names are so much harder for me!  I have one son already & when DH and I found out we were expecting #2, we already had a huge boy name list started.  Our girl list is really pathetic & I've changed my mind sooo many times. We found out that we ARE having a girl this time, and I THINK we found a name we like, but we'll see!!

    Good luck! :)

  • Ha!  We have a girl name all picked out, but we're not agreeing on the boy name.  He wants a strong tradional boys name, but he wants a cute name for a girl!  Lol. Luckily, I liked his idea for a girls name though!  ( even though it is pretty popular!) For a girl we think it will be Chloe Lynn.  She would have my middle name and her name will start with a C like mine.

  • Yes, my current go-to is "Margaret" I just like how strong yet feminine it can sound and yet it isn't terribly popular when vintage names are considered. He shot it down so fast and ask about Isabel. Which there is nothing wrong with Isabel, it's just far too popular for my style.

  • HA! Was just emailing my husband with a girl name. I'm 35 weeks. We are still struggling and have been this whole time. Our first daughter was easy, we named her after my sister. This time around we're team green and have found that we have very different naming styles - we're just like you and your husband. I want "older" names and he likes the really trendy stuff. We've got a list of 2 that neither of us absolutely love (Alison and Claire), but everything I try to add to the list gets shot down. Today Eloise got the big thumbs down. Damn it!

Eloise was one of my favorites for the longest time! Shot down too.

Love Margaret! It was my grandmother's name and Margaret Paige is currently #1 on my list!

  • We had a rough time naming DD-- DH liked Maci, Kylie, Lexie... blech.  Too cutesy for me.  We settled on Annabel Scarlett in the end!

  • Of course, I adore my DD's name, but I think its a decent suggestion here. Matilda is vintage and uncommon, but we use the nn Tillie which fits for your DH's interest in cutesy names. I like that it's a name I feel could grow with her and has a lot of good nn options. FTR, I love your suggestion of Margaret.

  • This makes me giggle. We had a fairly easy time with DD's name (Abigail Clare). THere are so many that could work well, i guess the hard part was narrowing it down. With boys it seems that there are so few names that are the strong/traditional type.

If we had another girl, I was pretty set on Elise Marie. A few of you liked Eloise and it was shot down by your DH's, just thought I'd throw the name Elise out there as something close to Eloise but a bit different for your consideration!

    Good luck!
