Since getting checked for dilation can...

trigger labor I've decided to pass on getting one today.  I'm VERY curious as to how far dilated, or if I'm dilated at all.  But I'm desperately wanting to put off L&D so I just decided I'm not going to have the dr check me this afternoon at my appt.

It's funny b/c during the whole pregnancy I'd told myself I wouldn't have an internal until 39 weeks and that's when I'd allow myself to get checked, since it probably wouldn't make a difference before that.  But I'm so freaked out that the dr would check me today and then send me straight over to L&D that I'm just going to keep my legs crossed!

I feel silly passing on it for this reason but I don't feel very rational about a whole lot these days anyways :)

Re: Since getting checked for dilation can...

  • I'm going to decline being checked tomorrow, which will likely make my doctor angry. I haven't been checked yet this pregnancy. Hopefully she won't decide to send me over to be induced. I had to be sent over last time for a leaking water and with this pregnancy they didn't expect me to go past 38 weeks. I'd really like to hold out and try to let him come natural tho.

Why would a doctor be angry if you don't allow them to check?  Is there a reason that it is medically necessary to do so?  I admit I allow them to check out of my own curiosity but don't really know the medical reason they would need to.

  • I'm with you right now.  I am going to decline being checked at my appointment today for the same reason.  I was totally ready for this baby to come, but since I just brought my dog Millie home from emergency care, and she's finally recovering, I don't want to leave her for 2 or 3 days until she's doing better.  I want to give her at least the rest of the week of my undivided attention.  Then, LO can come if he chooses.

  • I'd never heard it can trigger labor! I've been checked for dilation regularly since my hospital scare at 34 weeks without any further progress.  And I'm still willing to let her check today, because after 3 weeks of constant contractions I'm ready to meet my little darling! lol I don't think an OB would get mad if you turned them down for that.

  • This can trigger labor?  I never heard that!  I've been getting checked weekly since 34 weeks, and I WISH this would trigger something- my due date = today, and no progress yet! :-( :-(
  • I figure she might get mad because I went to her when I was pregnant with ds#1. Anytime I told her I didn't want checked or something she would tell me (whatever it was at the time) had to be done. They were also angry at me for nbot getting a pap but finally let it go because I had a history of first trimester miscarriages and didn't want to risk it. She is a little easier going this pregnancy since she has a p.a. but I've only seen my real doc 3 times this pregnancy and they insist I have an appointment with my doc this week while she's double booked so she can check me since the p.a. doesn't do that. I just kind of expect to be given a hard time about it. I had a very difficult time with it during my first pregnancy because it was extremely painful and they would get angry that I was jumpy, especially at the hospital. When they induced me they checked me every half hour to an hour and I was screaming so loud from the pain that people in the waiting room thought I was delivering. I'm hoping that this time I'll go natural and not have to go in at 1cm.

  • I meant to decline at last week's appointment but forgot to mention it before my Group B swab and up he went. So this week I told the nurse, when she asked me to take my bottoms off, that I'd like to pass unless the doc has a concern. She seemed a little taken back and said, "well you said the baby might have dropped, with an internal we can check to see if you're dialated." I told her I wasn't really concerned about it and she said ok and left. I was nervous the doc would come in and question/argue my decision, but he never brought it up. Just listened to the heartbeat, said everything looks good and he'd see me next week. I was nervous I'd get talked into it, but it went fine and I feel good for standing up for myself

  • My ob doesn't do them for repeat c/s (which makes sense) but she was out this week and the NP I saw wanted to do one.  I declined because really what's the point?  I was tempted to have her do one though just to try to trigger labor because I am SO SO SO done.  Stick out tongue

  • I basically declined being checked yesterday for the same reason.  Next week I'll accept the check though!

Amen!! I know it happens for some women but I am not one of the lucky ones! I was checked from 36-41 weeks with DS and I still had to be induced! Jealous for those who go into labor though!

  • If my doctor wants to check tomorrow then I will decline it. I'm not interested in having this baby yet at all. I don't think he plans to since at my last appt he said "...if you're still pregnant in two weeks we'll do another ultra sound" and that would be at next week's appt.

  • I was checked last week when they did the swab for Group B Strep.  This week they didn't ask and they didn't check.  I really think that the only reason they checked last week was because I was undressed already.  Not sure if they will check next week or not, I guess I will find out soon.  I never heard that they can trigger labor though.  Interesting.
