HLG~ Supplements/vitamins/exercise videos?

Is anyone trying to supplement with slimfast or protein bars or shakes? I walk by that dept 92 times a day and just want to try and see if it helps.

I just want to take a pill to help curb my cravings in the beginning to help me from being so hunry all the time.  Within 5 minutes of walking into my store I want chocolate.  I just need something to help with that.  I thought about asking my pharmacist for a recommendation.

I have the 30 day shred and carmen electra's striptease. I guess it's about time to take the plastic off of them. I think I bought those videos at least 3 years ago. Which workout are you trying?

Re: HLG~ Supplements/vitamins/exercise videos?

  • The 30 day shred is pretty awesome. I couldn't walk for two days after I did it the first time. I made DH buy me a treadmill last year so I'll be using that mostly. Maybe trying out Evan's mini trampoline while watching TV :)

I have never been big into the protein bars/shakes. I try to stay more natural when dieting...like, sticking to fruits/veggies/nuts for snacks.

DH and I both lost a lot of weight when we did the South Beach Diet after we got back from our honeymoon. Without excercising. I may look into that again...since it wasn't a fad diet - it was an eating healthy plan.

  • Watch out for protein bars- if you read the nutrition label on some of the slimfast meal bars they are similar to a snickers bar. Pills scare me. I've heard to drink a glass of water to curb cravings. Maybe you can bring healthy snacks to work- little baggies of almond or baby carrots? I think the only fix is just willpower... I know it sucks, this is why I'll never be skinny, haha.

Like I mentioned, I'm taking Zumba for an hour Mondays nights, a Total Body Boot Camp for an hour Wednesday nights then I plan on doing 2 days of an at home work out (I have the wii fit and a Jillian Michael's Wii game. I have a few dvds to dust off too)

I don't know what your work schedule is like but the Monday night class is in West Seneca at 7:15pm and the Wednesday night class is 7:15 in Hamburg... would you be able to come after work since they're pretty close?

  • 30 day shred is great!  Also check your cable company, we get free on demand fitness videos (30 day shred, tons of other jillian michaels, etc).

I don't use shakes or bars, most/a lot of them have artificial sweeteners and that is a big turnoff.

I drink a ton of green tea during the day.  I think it helps keep me busy/fuller, and it helps with metabolism and energy.

Not sure if you're actually asking about vitamins, but I take a women's multi every day.  I also take some other stuff - like flaxseed oil and omegas (good for heart health, circulation, skin, etc), vitamin c.  In the cold/flu season I also take stuff like echinacea, garlic, etc.

  • I'm joining you HLG girls. I don't do any shakes/supplements. I've been doing weight watchers since September and have actually found success on it. I am looking into some arm/leg exercised to build muscle. Google will be my friend for this I'm hoping.

  • I don't do any of the supplements or pills. DH and I agreed we have to get back to eating health again. The month of December was the worse. We were constantly running so we would get a lot of take out.

I bought DH a Kinect for Christmas and he bought me Dance Central for it. I have only been doing it for a couple days but it kicks my butt. It has different fitness programs in it as well. I haven't tried the fitness programs but have set up my own playlists for a bout 30 minutes. I would like to lose about 25lbs by summer. Hopefully I can do it.

  • Eat a well balanced and high fiber breakfast to keep you full. Oatmeal (not the flavored packets filled w/ sugar, but regular plain oats or steel cut oatmeal is even better) w/ some ff milk and fruit. Or egg whites w/ a 1/2 whole wheat English muffin and make a breakfast sandwich... even throw on a piece of ham or turkey and lowfat cheese... add in some veggies to the egg and a side of fruit. At least 3-4 days a week I just eat a green monster smoothie for breakfast and it keeps me full until at least 11am (when I usually have a snack- some fruit, almonds, yogurt or a cheese stick)

Or, like MrsWhite said- drink a big glass of cold water and then wait 5 minutes... you'd be surprised how it curbs your appetite. Hydration is key to controlling hunger.

As far as workouts- I've heard good things about Bar Method classes/videos. It's a full body ballet type workout. I'm going to try and rent it someplace because on amazon it's like $45. I also just like to go to the gym and use the weight machines (low weight/high reps) and get a good sweat going on the elliptical or treadmill.

  • Although it sounds tempting, I wouldn't want to touch supplements with a 10 ft. pole. Even Slim Fast or all of the Special K foods. I did that way back when I was first on WW (since it seemed the message was "Stay within your points, no matter what kind of crap you put in your body" back then) and look where it got me. I am really focusing more on eating whole foods, making things from scratch when possible so I'm putting fewer preservatives in my body.

I've found that by constantly drinking water, I'm less inclined to have cravings. It's much easier to do at work because I'm usually parked at my desk for most of the day, but when I'm well hydrated, I don't feel as hungry.

I've done 30DS - it's really a great workout when you don't have much time. The first couple of days killed me, but I found by the end of the week, the workouts became a lot easier to get through. When we finally get around to joining a new gym, I plan on attending classes 3 days/wk and try to run at least 3 days a week, either outside, or on the gym's indoor track.

  • The OTC stuff I never recommend, except for Alli but you need to watch what you eat with that  or else you will end up crapping your pants. The problem with a lot of the diet pills is they work well to curb your hunger initially, but then Your body overcomes that,  plus is now used to less calories, so people will overeat bc by then hey are so hungry and then the body is burning calories even worse bc it was just used to even less calories. Plus with some side effects, it's just not usually a great idea for people.
