I am new to the area and 16 weeks pregnant. I have been seeing Duke Womens Health Associates but just have not been very happy with them. While I like the nurses just fine,I still have not yet met the OB and the office staff, especially the financial counselor, are often unhelpful and very rude. While I would really like to deliver at duke, I'd much prefer to enoy the practice and feel like a person and not just a number. Can anyone recommend a good OBGYN practice in Durham/Chapel Hill? Many thanks!!!!
Re: recommendations on OB in Durham
I'm pretty sure only Duke OB's (Duke Women's Health and Duke OB/GYN) deliver at Duke. I'm not sure of any other clinics that deliver there.
If you would like to deliver at Durham Regional (which I would recommend-I work there, just not in L&D), I'd recommend Durham Women's Clinic, Chapel Hill OB or Durham OB/GYN.
I'm surprised to hear you say you haven't met an OB with DHWA. I had an OB from the beginning, and only met with the NP toward the end when I had more visits. But, I went to the Brier Creek office, so that may be the difference. If you decide to give them a chance, I would make sure to request that you get appts with an OB. If you're only telling them a day and time you want, they're just going to schedule you with whoever is available. Not sure if he works at the Durham office, but my favorite doc was the lone male in the practice, Dr. Nieves. He was incredibly nice and great about answering questions.
As for the office staff, I've found that in any medical situation, it's best to chat the staff up and be friendly. Admire the necklace they're wearing, the photo of their kids, whatever. It has always served me well and has often turned a sour-puss front desk person into a happy camper.
Good luck!
