When do toddlers start to eat again?

DD is 21 months old. Since about 15-16 months, she has been eating very little. I had read this was expected and all, but how long does this last? I know that she'll eat when she's hungry and she won't starve herself, but shes petite to begin with, so the fact that she's not really eating much concerns me to an extent. Right now, she downs a huge glass of milk as soon as she wakes up and she usually doesn't want breakfast. Contrast that to around 13/14 months she would have a 2 or 4 oz thing of yogurt and at least 4 mini pancakes. Sometimes I can get her to eat a little lunch if it's a grilled cheese and dinner is pretty much the same. Sometimes she'll snack in the afternoon, but that's pretty infrequent. When do toddlers begin eating regularly again???

Re: When do toddlers start to eat again?

  • Our pedi told us it gets worse before it gets better, and that 2-3 is the "pickiest" window.

Sorry. As a mom of another petite girl, I feel you.

    Dear Bump: You suck.

  • We are going through this too. All M wants is milk and oranges... Hmm
  • Our DS is also a little guy and is not good at eating! This may sound funny but I am so glad I read your post because it made me feel better that I was not the only one going through this. He is so picky what he used to like he no longer likes..some days are better than others. He does not eat well at daycare either. He has his well check tomorrow and I am nervous for the weigh in and seeing it all on the growth charts. So I do not have any answers for you because we plan to talk to the pedi tomorrow about his eating to see what she recommends. I just wanted to say you are not alone and thank you for your post!  Oh I also started buying the shakes for toddlers because I felt like at least he is getting some extra vitamins from that. We give him one of those a day(kind of pricey) and he will drink regular milk too..it's just the main food. The kido would survive on milk, mac and cheese, and mashed potatoes....it is super discouraging at dinner time when he won't even try what is on his plate.

  • Have you tried witholding that first big glass of milk?  If I let DD have a cup first thing she won't eat much at all before her afternoon nap, but if I make her wait on milk until lunchtime I can get her to have a decent breakfast.

  • Thanks for posting this because I was able to tell MH tonight, "It's normal! There was a post on the Austin board about this today." ;) Seriously, though, we also have a peanut and a lot of nights she goes to bed without eating anything at all for dinner. It try not to let it stress me out and just keep offering her a variety of healthy foods, but MH can make it hard. Tonight MH wanted a list of everything she ate today and was like, "So she hardly ate anything at all." And then he went on and on about how he's worried about her not getting enough protein, iron, etc. I keep having to remind him what the doctor and baby books say about it being normal.

But, I have to say it is so frustrating when I make all these different foods for her and she refuses to eat any of them!
