Ethan is having a Swallow Study done today. I am really hoping it goes well. Basically, the only thing holding up his transfer to the rehab facility is deciding whether or not he needs a G-tube before he goes. The results of the swallow study will determine g-tube or no g-tube.
He had only just started working on oral feedings when he had his hypoxic episode. Afterwards, he lost some of his suck/swallow coordination. The sucking is getting much better, but they are very worried that he is aspirating (the fluid going into his lungs rather than actually swallowing it). Since they are nervous about him aspirating, no one has been really pushing him with the oral feedings. The rehab facility wants the Swallow study done. If the results show he is swallowing they will accept him with the NG tube because they can offer feeding therapies to get him feeding orally in the next few weeks. If he is aspirating, they would prefer a G-tube because it will be a lot longer until they are able to get him feeding orally.
I am really hoping this study goes well. I don't want him to need the g-tube because it would be his 4th surgery. He has already been through enough. I also want to get this transfer underway. Getting the g-tube would delay the process another week or two. Keeping my fingers crossed for my little guy!!
Will keep you posted!
**Update #1
Ugh so frustrated. Radiology messed up the appointment. The NP spoke to radiology twice this morning to confirm the time and they even transported him there (which is not easy with a baby on a vent) and they said they didn't have him on the schedule. So annoying that this is delayed another day. It was rescheduled for tomorrow morning. Will update you after the test.

Our precious girl, born at 27 weeks.
Good luck! Please keep us posted
I'm a new g-tube mom, so if the dr. decide that's what is best feel free to ask questions. There are a couple of other g-tube moms here as well.
