HLG--Is your DH on board? (It got long, sorry!)

I didn't get around to answering any HLG posts over the weekend b/c I'm not fond of posting from my phone, but I am all in!  DH and I went grocery shopping over the weekend and stocked up on chicken breasts, fruits & veggies, and some other healthier food options.  I made a big batch of apple & cinnamon oatmeal in the crock pot for our breakfasts for the week (https://allrecipes.com/recipe/slow-cooker-oats/detail.aspx).  I hope to do this every Sunday night.  I'm not a huge fan of oatmeal, but I'm learning to like it.

We tried this health change about 3 years ago and had some success, then I got pg, had a m/c, and have basically been pg and/or BFing for the past 2.5 years.  I have a LOT of weight to lose but hope to set small goals for myself (first goal is 15lbs. by Stella's 2nd birthday on March 31).  I want to get my eating under control and then add in some walking sessions on my ILs treadmill 3-4 days/week.  This goes along with my other "resolution" of taking some time for myself.

Anyway, when DH & I did this back in '08, DH went all out.  Only eating Wheaties for breakfast, PB&J on ww bread, carrots, almonds, chicken, water, no cheat meals at all.  He got this idea from Men's Health and lost quite a bit of weight.  I take more of a healthy eating/WW style approach, eating more fruits and veggies, whole grains, lean meats, etc.  We agreed on having pizza once/month (our go-to take out meal).  He seems more on board with this way of doing things this time around so we are definitely in this together and it's nice to have the support...from him and from you ladies!  Good luck everyone!

  • DH is supportive of my weight loss and exercise efforts, but is he on board with me? Unfortunately, no. We tend to eat healty dinners (lean proteins, veggies), but he doesn't really do anything else. I wish he would, but I know there are other factors playing into his habits right now, and it's really up to him to want to change, yadda, yadda. Maybe if other things change in our lives in the next few months, things will be different.

Tina - glad your DH is going to do it with you! Making it a natural way of living for you guys will definitely make it easier. Good luck!

  • Yes!  Thankfully!  DH put on weight when I was pregnant with L, he never lost any of it, and then put more on when I get was pregnant with A.  So now he's the heaviest he's ever been, and he has sleep apnea.  He said to me the other day, he's done and needs to get the weight off.  I think he's just kind of waiting for me.  The good thing is he eats whatever I make for dinner, so now he just needs to make the right decisions for the breakfast and lunch.  That and he needs to start working out again.  Our basement is perfect for a work out area, and a few years back he got some crazy deal on a 3k bowflex machine that he needs to put together, so hopefully he'll do that soon.

  • DH goes through cycles.. like in the spring he was on this big health kick, running every day for like an HOUR.. not eating much except nasty protein bars and iceberg lettuce (ok, he did eat other stuff, but like no carbs).

Now, he hasn't worked out in weeks, and when we went to his cousin's DD's 5th bday, he had like a big plate of ziti and more than a dozen pigs in a blanket!!  Plus cake, etc.  He literally almost threw up on the way home.  So he doesn't have much self discipline when it comes to not giving into splurges.  I'm not saying not to splurge - just not like that.

If there's candy in the house or anything, he goes for it.. but I'm sure when the weather gets warmer and he has more free time, he'll get obsessed with working out again.  I almost think he needs to be on weight watchers or something really structured.

That being said - I try to cook healthy for him, try to respect eating smaller portions and eating healthier - but then he goes and pigs out on candy or something after I make a nice, "clean" dinner.

    I'm open to suggestions :)

  • I have been part of the HLG before but since DW and I just had a conversation about this yesterday I thought I would chime in.

When DW was gone I bought a treadmill and was really good about running.  Then in August we switched DD's daycare and now it takes me much longer to get home at night.  Ever since then our routine has been out of whack and I haven't run.

I explained to DW that I need her to take over the bedtime routine twice a week so that I can have that time to run.  She's on board but I know it won't happen right away.  We're going to have to get DD on board too ;-)  I am really hoping though that DW can do it because I need to lose a few pounds.

  • Yes!  Thankfully!  He supports me when I want to go jog or go to the gym.  He is starting his own workout routine and doing the No Junk Food Challenge with me for 21 days.  He wants to start working on portion control next month :)

The Fayetteville Y, I love it there!  A bit pricey, but it is nice because the kids can use it too (ie. gym, pool, etc)
