Are you using a lovey?

I know you are supposed to introduce a lovey around 6 months but I'm afraid of her suffocating.  I want to use a little blanket with a head but I'm scared.  She rolls and is quite mobile so I really don't think it will be a problem but I'm still scared.

I forgot to ask my pedi about it at her 6 mo appointment.  Are you using one?  What does it look like?

Am I over thinking this?

Re: Are you using a lovey?

  • We've been using one since I can remember.  Just another bad parenting moment brought to you by me.  It's really not an issue...by the time I go to bed Bunny is on the other side of the crib and DD is out cold and never misses her.  I don't know how many times I've seen her pull Bunny on top of her face when I put her down in the crib for bed at night and at nap time she uses her as a pillow since she sleeps on her belly for naps.

  • LO has one with an elephant head attached to a soft blanket with silk like edging and loves it! He reaches for it when he goes to bed. I can post a pic when I get inside.

  • We have been using one since he started DC at 11 weeks. He only gets to use it there.  He is not really attached to it at all.  But I figured it was ok there since there were 2 teachers in the room at all times to watch him so the suffication risk in my mind was lower.

  • J has been using a lovey since around 2 mo. his is a little hippo lovey from PBK and he actually sucks on it to go to sleep (he won't use a paci...)

  • We use this one from Target. It's small enough that it doesn't worry me. Also, I always check on S before I go to bed and will move it away from his face if it looks like it's too close.

  • I was thinking the same thing!  I want to use one, but am so scared!!  When Riley is awake, we play peek a boo by putting a little blanket or burp cloth over her face, and she pulls it off really well, but sleeping still makes me nervous.
  • Yes, but it pretty much just gets pushed to the corner of crib.  She doesn't seem interested in it.  Both DH and I have worn it under are clothes for a day to get our smell on it.  Plus, we have given it to her to hold while holding her.  Still nothing.  I guess she just won't be a lovey user.

FYI...we have a small blanket one with a head also.

  • K had had one since she was born.... Actually, two... So she has one for our house and one for my parent's house. She still doesn't show much interest in it to be honest. Then again.... I let K sleep with a light blanket covering her lower half.

This is exactly what we use! However, DD doesn't roll. After she falls asleep, I go in and take out the lovey every night and during naps. I'm worried about her sleeping with it. Maybe in a few months I will let her keep it but for now, it helps her fall asleep (she likes to talk to it) and she doesn't seem to need it during the night.

  • nope. I'm too paranoid so she doesn't have anything in her crib with her at night. For naps she does sleep with an A&A blanket that I also send to school for naps. I'm more comfortable with it then because I can see her on the monitor or her teachers are in the room at school. I'm considering getting some of the small A&A security blankets to give her instead of the full size ones.

Since she doesn't have any problems falling or staying asleep, I haven't really worried about trying to get her to use one.

  • Ty doesn't really need them to fall asleep, but they're lifesavers on the weekends when he decides to wake up at 6:30 and we still want to get some sleep.  I'll give him a lovey, turn on the sleep sheep and he'll play for a few minutes until he falls back asleep.  It was AWESOME yesterday when he woke up and fell back asleep until 9:30!  DH and I were like "Kid, we've never loved you as much as we do right now!".

That is what we use and have been for a couple of months.  I was scared at first... and still am sometimes because one of her favorite things to do is lay the blanket over her face but it has been fine.  Honestly that only happened for a couple of weeks and now she usually just pets it while she is falling asleep.  It's pretty cute really.

Swap Bunny for Doggy, and change some pronouns to the masculine, and this is us, 100%

  • YES!! His is a black dog head with a blue blanket that my aunt gave to him while we were on vacation. He seriously is in love with this thing. Once he's in the crib I give it to him. He rubs the dog on his face and rolls around the crib with him. My little guy is super mobile and no matter where he rolls in the crib his "woof woof" is with him. Before I go to bed I move him away from his face. In the morning he finds him and is all cuddled with him when i get him.

  • We just started using one but only for naps. I cover her with a light blanket and also give her one of those small blankets with the head. She doesn't roll in her crib and likes to just grip onto the blanket. It does make me a little nervous but I check on her frequently, and the blanket is usually at her feet after she's asleep. I'm too paranoid to let her have anything at night. All she gets is her sleep sack.

  • We have 3, she doesn't like any of them.

Seriously bad parenting here-- she has a thick, double sided blanket that she refuses to sleep without- and she promptly rolls to her side and buries her face in it- the other day she got both sides of it on each side of her head and blew a fit when I tried to move it.

I figure she can get herself all over the crib and turn herself in a full circle, plus the angelcare monitor- we're ok.

  • Sounds like a lot of you are already using one.  I think I'll start and see what happens today for naps.  I've also heard to get my scent on it so that it might be more comforting.

    Thanks for all your input!

us too...Mrs. Bear is a lifesaver.  She is much smaller than most..like the size of a baby facecloth.   She puts it on her face cause it smells like me.  I was nervous initially but started only during naps when I could observe her...she always flings it away once she is asleep...or just hols it in her hands away from her face....you should get one! but realize they tend to choose their own lovey....Abbey has no interest in any other stuffed animals/Loveys

  • We have the Angel Dear Puppy head-on-a-blanket, who is aptly named 'Puppy'. I put Puppy near him whenever we were doing something fun- nursing, changing table (which he used to love) since he was about a month old. He never seemed to notice. I also stuffed Puppy down my shirt and had H do the same, so it would smell like us.

Then, quite suddenly around 5 months, he started liking Puppy. And now he is a fixture at nap and bedtime. he's the only thing in the crib with J and as soon as I lay him down his arm shoots out across the mattress to hug Puppy. It's adorable, and I think a key to his soothing himself to sleep.

  • DD uses one with a little bear head. DD is a tummy sleeper and usually plays with it and then uses it as a pillow. She does occasionally fall asleep on her back now but only if her lovey is over her face (she puts it there). I guess she takes after her mom- I like to sleep with a pillow over my head.

  • We have a froggy that I have him snuggle with when I put him down for naps, bed, and when we have quiet time on my lap.  I also throw it in his car seat with him whenever we go anywhere.  He snuggles it and plays with the tag, but he can sleep without it, too.  He always has it at naps and sometimes at night.  It never ends up close to him and I don't see it as a problem.

We have this one too. He uses it mostly at naps. One time I gave it to him at bed time and i accidently fell asleep. When i woke up 2 hours later i checked on him and the lovey was completely covering his face. I quickly snatched it off and he was fine but i felt horrible. I dont give it to him at night anymore.
