I haven't done too much research about this yet, but it is something that I am interested in after I DS comes along.
Is this something you incorporated into your families diet, or do they still eat grains/dairy? I have a 6 and a 3 year old.
I've heard this isn't optimal for BFing. Were any of you able to sucessfully BF while doing paleo?
Was the transition hard? (carb freak, sugar addict over here)
I'm using up what's in my pantry now, because I hate to waste, but I really want to clean up the eating habits of the whole family.
Re: Questions for Moms who do Paleo
We're just starting to do paleo, but a modified version because we are incorporating some WAPF-style foods. As of yet, I don't have a lot of advice!
I see no reason it wouldn't be good for BF, with modifications as needed. It's basically replacing less nutritious food with more nutritious food but if you have supply problems you can make mods.
All of our family meals will be paleo-style, but the foods that I buy specifically for the kids won't need to be. I have a 4yo and also feed the 3yo and 1yo that I nanny, and with their food "preferences" it would be near impossible to safely feed them a complete diet of paleo foods. Cheese sticks and grilled cheese mostly, but where the kids are concerned I'm just not going to stress over it, KWIM? I have enough to worry about with making changes for DH and I so I figure it will trickle down to the kids. I hope somebody else as more useful input!
I'm pregnant with my first, so I don't have experience with kids and paleo, but DH and I have both eaten a paleo diet for over a year and don't plan on changing our eating habits when the baby arrives (or when I'm BFing). We aren't super strict about it, especially with dairy (I don't drink milk, but occasionally have cottage cheese or put shredded cheese on eggs), but the staples in our diet are definitely meat, veggies, fruits, and nuts.
The transition isn't too difficult, especially if you get creative with recipes. Spaghetti squash is a great sub for pasta dishes. And as far as your sweet tooth, you can make some amazing desserts with dark chocolate, coconut, dates, spices, etc. Lara bars are a good store-bought option for this. I've always craved meats more than breads anyway, but I found that after cutting grains out of my diet, after about a week or two I didn't crave or want them at all. And the proof is in the results -- I feel AMAZING!
Good luck!
