speech

I was just wondering what is normal for a 26 weeker at age 2. DS#1 was born at 26wks 1day and i feel as if his brother who just turn one says more words then him. do you think he will be needing speach therapy? I dont want him to have to strugle later on with speach so should I start now? we are also going to have him do two years of preschool when he is of age one year by himself and one with his brother then they will be in the same grades. TIA!

Re: speech

  • All kids develop differently but its worth asking about.

Have you had an EI evaluation? I would contact your pedi and ask for the contact info or a reference for Early Intervention then they can send out a speech therapist for an eval. I would do it soon if your pedi thinks its necessary since most states age out of EI at 3 years.

We had an evaluation when he came home from the hospital and they said that he was on target for his adjusted  age.  and his 2 yr appoint is the 27th so i will ask. thanks for the advice.

  • Our 25 weeker started getting help with speech right after her actual 2nd birthday.  She had no words at all, and we talked to the Pedi at the 2 y.o. check up about it.  He recommended a private evaluation for speech therapy since we were opting not to use our local hospital due to long wait lists.  So, we started private speech therapy and she started public day care, part-time.  We had Early Intervention during this time, but frankly, the speech providers were not very helpful to us.  I didn't realize how far off our 25 weeker was with starting to use words until I had my 35 weeker.  I see now that he already has multiple words and he is not even 18 mo. old.  I am glad that I asked for help with DD, and I think the combination of private speech therapy, day care, and work with us at home has given us great improvement.  She was evaluated for the integrated classroom recently and has no identified disability nor speech delay compared to her peers.  GL!

  • Andrew is a 26-weeker too.

We had an EI eval at 19 mo for speech, too.  He had 2 words, 2 babble sounds.  He more than qualified.  He has had speech 2/week (once at school, once through EI) for a whole year.  Now, he is caught up, at age 3.

FWIW Andrew was totally caught up to his adjusted age at 12 mo adjusted, so we stopped EI.  Then, suddenly, he stopped progressing.

Trust your gut, it never hurts to get a new EI.

    Hooray for "please!"

Keep us updated on what your pedi thinks. I'm always interested in language posts. The developmental clinic told us that DD is already delayed in language (no consonant sounds or babbling) so I like to know what we need to pay attention to moving forward.
