I don't schedule his naps. But I can tell he is trying to figure out the naps on his own, some days he still takes 3 some days 2, what I have noticed is it still amounts to the same number of hours.
We're going through this too. I usually watch for sleepy signs and then put her down. It has been three times a day for a long time but she's started to drop one lately. I'm trying to take her lead on it.
Usually she's up at 6 a.m. First nap at 7:30 to 9:30. Then second nap usually starts around noon or so until 2 or 3 p.m. Then down for the night around 6:30 p.m. If she's up at 2 p.m. from her second nap it's sort of a stretch for her to be up until 6:30. So we're still trying to figure it out.
We are lucky if we get two naps. Many days it is only one mid morning which is about two hours. Some days she will cat nap in the car on the way(around 4) But since it is a 10-15 minute ride it isn't a real nap. And she is awake when we pull up usually.
She does however go to bed between 5:30 and 6:30 and STTN though. There is just way too much going on during the day to relax.
We went down to two a few weeks ago when he just started refusing to go down for his third. Now his naps have evened out, and the two left are much longer. It's delicious.
She cut out her third nap about a month ago. Occasionally she'll get tired early (if we've had a big day) and she takes a nap while I make dinner. That hasn't happened recently though. I also let her figure out her own routine, and followed her lead to create it. Like a pp said, she's still napping the same amount of time total, it's just split into twos instead of threes.

We've been down to 2 naps for several weeks now. One of her naps is usually in excess of 2 hours (sometimes 3)!
When the transition from 3 to 2 naps happened, DD initiated it and I just followed her cues.
