Upstate NY Babies

Baby Wearing-moby, k'tan, etc

I have a Bjorn I bought when pregnant with DD-honestly I used it maybe twice and wasn't super thrilled with it. I think I'll want to wear this baby  more just so I have some free hands for DD at times. I'm wondering what's the best to get-I hate to go out and buy one (they're so expensive) and then hate it. Anyone have any recs or have one that they want to get rid of?

Re: Baby Wearing-moby, k'tan, etc

  • I really liked my mom for the early months.  When DD got too the point that I could back carry I purchased a Mei Tai from Baby Hawk.  I LOVE that carrier.  It's my go-to for a quick and easy carry.  I also have the Ergo.  I use the Ergo for traveling (it's easier to snap than to wrap when stuck on a plane or train).  I would like to get a woven but can't justify the expense when I have two carriers that work great.

If you have a sling babies group near you they will allow you to rent slings for $10 a month.  It can be a good way to try out different types before you invest in one.

  • I am hoping to love the moby this time.  I didn't have one to try with dd.  I also have a ergo which I didn't like that much for the early months with dd, but the reason I didn't like it was because I found it to be too painful with her against my chest.  I am hoping to not have as much pain with bfing this time, so I am hoping that the front carries are better for me so that I can use the ergo and moby on my chest.

I also had that infantino sling that was recalled and a pouch sling.  I found the infantino easier to get her in and out of, so that is what I used more.  But obviously, I won't use that this time.  So I will give the pouch one a try, but really I am hoping to like the moby a lot.  The downside with the slings that I didn't like, is that the weight is not evening distributed - it is all on one shoulder.  Also, once I leaned forward to put stuff in the closet and then she also kinda slung forward and her head rammed into the wall.  Not hard, but I felt horrible, so I like the ones that are more up against your body like the ergo and moby.

I bought my ergo from bbb with the 20% off coupon and the moby from someone online used.  There is a website that the attachment parenting board talks about where you can buy used carriers.  I can't remember the name, but maybe check there?  People seem to get good deals.

  • when my girls were itty bitty, i used a pouch sling (hotslings) the most.  I also have a mei tei I've used out and about with Natalie a bit, but Now that she's bigger, there aren't many options that will let her face out.. I have an Infantino Comfort Rider, that is a bjorn type that works pretty well for us for that... The moby will let her face out too but I think its such a pain for anywhere except right around the house.

I have a fake ergo too but I haven't used it really at all yet.

The pikkolo is a good carrier if you want one for facing out.

  • I use my moby a lot with X- I didnt get it until L was almost 4 months and by then I felt he was too heavy for the stretchy material- so I used the ergo for L most of the time...

I tried to start with the ergo for X (I have the infant insert) but it felt like too much fabric with him- so we use the moby...

  • I had a Moby with Charlotte and I used it all the time when she was very little. It is big and long, so it is kind of a pain if you have to put it on while out, and I never wanted to put it in the diaper bag because it took up a lot of valuable real estate, but around the house while I was trying to get things done, or if she was being fussy for nap, or if I planned ahead and just put it on before we started our errands, it was great and she was almost guaranteed to fall asleep in it.

After she was too big for that, I tried the 7 Slings (with the "free" promotion they run) and while it was nice to have in the diaper bag because it was tiny and I could do it with one hand, the fabric was rough and it wasn't as sturdy/versatile as I would have liked.

My latest purchase was a ring sling from sleepingbaby.net. I love it, even now, for Charlotte. Well, maybe not huge pregnant now, but for a kid Charlotte's size now. I can comfortably wear her on my hip or back, and I used it to help her nap at Thanksgiving and it still worked just fine. It is pretty simple to use, adjustable, and not huge like the Moby. Like JNK mentioned, all the weight is on one shoulder, so I don't use it for hours on end, but we've gone around the farmer's market or the grocery store and not had problems.

This time I also just got a couple yards of cotton guaze to try as a wrap. Charlotte is a little squirmy for me to practice on, and I feel like the learning curve is a lot more difficult, so we'll see how it goes with this baby.

  • I still use my moby almost  everyday.  Love it!!  I do use the egro, too, but not as often yet.
  • I used a Moby when T was really young, and it worked great. Now that's he's older, I use a Beco Gemini, I love it. They can face in or out on the front, and you can also do hip and back carries in it when they're older. The straps are really comfortable, T is probably more than 15 pounds and I wear him for an hour at the grocery store with no back pain. I could never do that in the Bjorn which I had when R was a baby.
  • I have a Moby, Pikkolo, Ergo & woven wrap (Girasol) and I love them all :)

Paul was in a carrier the majority of a time. I just found it so much easier to have him happy being worn with my hands free to chase/play with Charlie.
