DS seems to poop almost every time he eats like while he is eating. When I change him, he wakes up and wants to eat more. I don't remember this happening with DS#1. We supplemented with him so maybe he didn't poop as often. 3 times last night I thought I was going to lay down with him for a while, and right when I would lay him down he would go, so I would change him, he would wake up, I would nurse again on my empty boobs, etc, etc.
Is this normal? How long does this last??
Re: bfing newborn ?
Abby used to do that, I forget for how long. Perfectly normal. Eating stimulates hormones the digestive system as does being "awake". It generally shifts as their circadian rhythm begins to have some respect for it being "night" or "day" which is generally around 9-12 weeks I think? You can help with the night rhythm by being as quiet as possible, no talking, no stimulation, very dim lights (consider a dimmer switch), no TV or other lights (including iPhone!!) and some even say no eye contact but I was never able to keep to that one. It just seemed cold.
After many sleepless nights, here's what I did. When Abby would wake up to eat, I'd change her diaper first and absolutely coat her in Aquaphor. Then I'd reswaddle her and nurse her. Sometimes I could tell she'd pooped and yes, I would just put her down back down to sleep anyway. It didn't bother her so I learned not to let it bother me. Lord knows she'd be up in 2-3 hours anydamnway so it's not like she'd be in poopy diaper all day! And BF poop isn't all that bad on their skin. She never got a diaper rash. I did have to do laundry a few times for leaks but I could deal with that if it meant 30 more minutes of sleep and not trying to nurse her back to sleep on empty boobs*.
I went up a size in diaper so that occasionally I could just leave her diaper on wet and not even unswaddle to nurse her. We went through a lot of aquaphor
. I think we get so caught up in the "must feed and change the baby" cycle that we interrupt the sleep cycle by waking them up too much. I know I did with Emily in the beginning. She was such a loud sleeper that I kept trying to nurse her back to sleep before she got fully awake and I was in fact waking her up! Once they can get through deeper REM sleep, they will naturally not need to eat as much as night and the gastrointestional system will also slow down. Hence, less pooping at night. Think about it. When was the last time you had to poop in the middle of the night
??
*I felt a sense of satisfaction in breastfeeding when there was actually milk coming out. And I know that comfort nursing or nursing on the empty breast is good for milk stimulation etc. However, anytime I nursed them on empty and they got at all frustrated, it made me feel like a failure. So I tried not to if I could help it!
Hope something in here helps!
Connor use to poop everytime Iwas bfing him and would take like 10 minutes to totally finish. it does get better. I want to say about 3 months
