Landlords: A few questions about when a renter moves out???

Do you clean the house and make it ready? or do you hire somebody to do it?

We just moved out of our house and are keeping it as a rental but I'm not sure I want to spend the time to clean and make ready the house. I'm exhausted and going back to work on Tuesday means that we won't be able to get anything done on the house till the weekend.

  • Our housekeeper came in and cleaned it up.  Best money I ever spent!

  • I always pay somebody. ALWAYS.

I have too many other things to deal with to mess with that. They can do it quicker than I can anyway.

  • We actually have it written into the lease that our tenants must have the entire place professionally cleaned (and provide us with a receipt) as part of their move-out routine.  If they don't do it, we pay someone to do it but we take it out of their deposit. A lot of the time, there are just 2 or 3 days between tenants and when you have kiddos, it's a lot to expect that you'll be able to clean an entire house by yourself.  TRUST me!

In your particular case, I'd totally just pay someone to do it.  Also - you might want to consider putting the professional cleaning into your lease - it will save you a lot of hassle in the long run.

  • we always clean ourselves . it sucks, just hire someone.

Yep, same here - we have it in our leases that they must be professionallycleaned.  I remind them of the clause in the lease when they give their ms oveout notice.  If they don't want to clean it, I give them the option of paying a fee with their last month's rent to have our cleaning person do it.
