Sitting up independently question

DD has been sitting up very well for a few months now. I consider her an unsupported sitter. She doesn't really topple over when she is entertained and happy. However, when she gets bored or tired or fussy, she sometimes will fall over. For this reason, I am not comfortable leaving her to sit up on a hardwood floor, and walking out of the room. I am usually sitting right next to her to catch her.

Does your LO sit up unsupported indefinitely? How do you know when is it okay to leave them in a sitting position on their own?

  • I felt comfortable leaving mine alone in the sitting position for a minute or two once I knew she could stil unsupported indefinitely BUT only if she was on some kind of carpet or mat. Not on our hardwood because she would sometimes topple over or force herself to fall backwards when she was done sitting. Since she can get herself in and out of the sitting position now, it doesn't concern me as much. These days, I'm more concerned about her getting into things as she's more mobile. ;)

I can totally identify.  For this reason, I usually put the boppy around DS if I have to leave the room.

  • DD sits well, but sometimes will fall. Also, even when she doesn't fall, she can be clumsy when she moves from a sit to another position.

We have hardwood so I will let her sit on one of those activity rugs for kids(has like a town and roads on the rug) and then I place pillows around the rug. The rug isn't huge, but it's a good size for play, and the pillows allow me to let her play w/o me sitting right next to her in case she falls. You could also use a blanket, but they slide more on the wood. We have a playpen too, but she is doesn't like being in there long. Also, I use the playpen in the kitchen and it's a pita to move from room to room.

  • I have tiles all over the house, so my floors are as hard as they can get. We had to put giant rubber squares on the floor and a quilt on top of that until baby was able to get in and out of a sitting position by herself.
