Turning Edward into a girl's name

As long as we're doing name posts, thought I'd jump onto the bandwagon before everyone tires of them.

My dad's name is Edward, and I worship the ground he walks on.  If we have a son, we will be using Edward as his middle name.  (I aimed for first name, but it's a no-go with my husband.)  If we have a girl, I am thinking we should still name her after my dad in case we do not have another child (we are thinking seriously of stopping with one).  So ... feminine forms of Ed/Edward that would work as middle names?  So far, I've thought of:

Edna (hate)

Edie (could be cute)

Edith (which I particularly like if it would be prounounced Ed-ith rather than Eed-ith, what spelling would do that?)

FWIW, the baby's first name will be Arabic, which means it will most likely be 2-3 syllables and end in an -a.  :)  (For now, assume something like Raya, Laila, or Amala.)

Out of those, I like Edith (pronounced Ed-ith) after Raya or Lalia.  It flows pretty well and it's a nice tribute! :)

OP again.  I guess Edwina and Edwarda are obvious choices, but I think they're kind of ugly.  Am I right?  Or am I losing the tribute by using a less-derivative name?

If you add Lee or Lynn an the end of most names it makes them sound feminine. For example Edlynn or Edlee (Edley would work too)

Here are a few girls names beginning with Ed that I pulled off of nameberry.com:

    Eda

    Edana

    Eda

    Eden

    Edie

    Edina

    Edlyn

    Edna

Don't quite translate as literally as Edwina, but if you dad goes by Ed, they might work?

That's a tough one!  And can I say I'm glad DH isn't pushing for us to do that if it's a girl.  I like Aada.  That's nice!  Edie is also nice.  Though are you done having kids after this one?  Could you consider waiting on honoring dad until you have a boy if this one is a girl?  And if you get to your last child and it too is a girl, then go for the tribute?

What about Eddison? Kind of like Addison, that would be cute! Edie is adorable as well.

I can only think of Edith. No spelling would let ppl know to pronounce it Ed-ith. It will prob be always pronounced Ee-dith since that's all most ppl have heard of.  : (

This is likely our only child.  If I can't come up with something decent and nice, I won't push it, which I was curious about everyone's thoughts and suggestions.  I think a number of these names are pretty cute, though, actually!

    Not really.  It's Eugene.  :(

Could you use your maiden name as the middle name? Or some sort of variation? For instance, my maiden name ended in "gia" so I thought of using the name Gianna and calling her Gia for short.

I'm with CopsGirl, she will probably spend her whole life correcting people on how to say her name.  I work with a lady whose name is pronounce Dee-onna and it's spelled Diana and she is ALWAYS correcting people and getting annoyed.  There are several girls in my family who have boy names as middle names, have you thought of doing that?

    Not really.  It's Eugene.  :(

What about Jean? That's my middle name. Another thing to consider is that while Ed-ith is not a common pronunciation, she isn't likely to have to tell people how to pronounce it very often.

    I LOVE Eden.

My baby name book has these additional names beginning with "Ed-":  Edalene, Edana, edda, Edeen, Edel, Edjo, Edlyn, Edmunda, Edolia, Edra, Edreanna, Edrei, Edrina, Edris, Edsel, Edshone.

We bought The Complete Book of Baby Names and really like it. Each name has a meaning and origin along with several additional spellings and translations. All the names I listed have additional spellings and ideas. It's really cool.
