I am just curious, FI and I were discussing this today when he met a baby boy who was named William but is called Liam. He questioned this because a little while ago we recieved not good comments on this board about how Brady is not an acceptable nickname for Brayden. We were told Brady is a first name, not a nickname, and a nickname should have less syllables then the first name.
FYI, I love Brady and he loves Brayden, so we thought the Brayden nn Brady combination would be a good compromise. Thats why I am asking.
So, what makes a nickname "acceptable?"
Re: William nn Liam vs Brayden nn Brady
I am not so sure about the less syllable rule when it comes to nn - many nn have the same or more syllables (my nn is Krissy - when contains the same amount of syllables - and I could list about a million others).
You most certainly could use Brady for Brayden (though IMO Brady DOES make a better first name than Brayden on its own) if that was something you chose to do. Most everyone (myself included) on this board wish the whole -aiden name craze would die already - so I don't think you will come across many people telling you Brayden is "good".
As for William/Liam - They are both fine names. Liam is a stand alone name of its own right. I know 2 kids named this. I also know a few kids that use Liam as a nn.
IMO, a nn does not need to come from a name, but from their personality. My son, Dillon, does not have a nn that stems from his name - I actually correct people who try to shorten Dillon to Dill or especially Dilly. I do have a nn for him I almost exclusively use with MORE syllables than his name that stems from his energetic - dare devilish personality.
I think far too often people try to find a nn before finding a good given name. You never will know what you will naturally call a child once they are actually here. I know a 4yo girl whose name is Isabelle, she screams at her mother is she shortens it to Belle , which was the "plan".
After 7 years trying to concieve, 3 failed IUIs and 2 failed IVFs, my third IVF was a success!
My Christmas baby turned into a turkey bird! Dillon Richard was born at 34 weeks, 5 days on November 28, 2009 after 10 weeks on bedrest for preeclampsia.

I just want to give you a world as beautiful as you are to me.
It's all opinion...don't take it to heart.
If you want to name your baby Brayden, but call him Brady - go for it.
FWIW, I prefer the name Brady as a standalone name.
