Slow rising HCG numbers. Should I be worried??

Here is my history of my HCG levels.4 positive HPT's on Wednesday 12.14.111 positive blood test @ Dr on Thursday 12.15.11HCG level on 12.15.11 (Thursday) was 93.8HCG level on 12.20.11 (Tuesday) was 297HCG level on 12.22.11 (Thursday) was 617Met with Dr on 12.22.11 (Thursday) did vaginal exam & thought I was very early on in my pregnancy.HCG level on 12.27.11 (Tuesday) was 2800 & Dr was very pleased with how they were rising.  Scheduled U/S for 12.29.Had U/S on 12.29 & the tech said I was measuring around 5 weeks.  She actually wouldn't even print me out a picture & said there was a gestational sac but didn't seem very optimistic.  When speaking to my Dr, he felt it was just "too early to tell" just yet but considering that I've had no miscarriage syptoms he didn't seem to be worried.Today (Friday 12.30.11) I had another HCG draw & it was 4628.Even though they didn't rise as how the Dr's would expect them to, she said it is still positive that they are rising.I'm going for another draw on Sunday.See my cycles are so incredibly out of whack I have no idea when I ovulated & I certainly can't go on the basis of my last period.  I'm trying to not worry & stay focused on other things.Thoughts?Any of you have slow rising HCG levels?Would my body still be increasing the HCG levels if I was indeed moving towards a miscarriage?I've had NO signs of a miscarriage but I do have pregnancy symptoms.TIA, I don't remember my other two pregnancies being this stressful. :/

Re: Slow rising HCG numbers. Should I be worried??

  • Your hCG is rising. It means your LO is still there, still growing. Remember this, there's no exact science here. You can have very high #'s, look like it's twins, and find out it's only one, very healthy baby. You can have low, slow-rising #'s and have a very healthy, happy LO. Those #'s vary greatly, and drs use them as a guideline only. There's no hard and fast rule, OK?

  • When was your LMP??? Since you don't know when you ovulated because of having "out of whack" cycles its very possible that you are farther behind.

Your 1st and 2nd hcg wasn't "great" based on the fact that your levels should double every 48-72 hours. However, it looks like they started to double there after. Which is great. Sometimes hcg levels are slow to rise and you can continue to go on and have a successful pg.

Speaking from experience my levels during my BO and missed m/c were still rising when I found out I was in fact m/c. They weren't doubling correctly but they were still rising and I was still experiencing pg symptoms. It was a cruel joke.

I wish you the very best and hope that at your next u/s you see a healthy babe w/ a beautiful flickering hb

  • My RE says that the minimun rise she finds acceptable is 53% every 48 hours.  My first two numbers were pretty sluggish, they only rose by 52%.  My subsequent numbers were better.  GL!

  • I think it sounds ok to me. Seeing a sac at 5 weeks is actually very good. That's all they really should see at that point. That ultrasound tech sound like an insensitive doofus to me. He/she should have given you a picture and should not have given you any indication of what was going on.

This! Hopefully you'll have a better appointment AND u/s tech next time!

Yes This exactly.  A 60% increase in levels every 48-72 hours is the "general rule".  Doubling is merely an expectation of most providers.  GL and update us!

  • The same thing happened to me...

Went in and got blood drawn on a Friday, levels were 3521

U/S showed I was measuring 4w3d when based on my LMP I should have been 7 weeks. (I have long cycles and O around CD 19-21)

Went back in on Monday for another draw and numbers 7131. While they did rise, it was over a 72 hour period, not 48 and the nurses didn't seem optimistic.

A week later we went in and saw the heartbeat and our sweet little baby.

Everyone is different, and your levels are rising. Sometimes, mother nature just doesn't want to be rushed!

    Hang in there!

     This!

My OB wanted me levels to rise by 50% within 72 hours.

  • UPDATE :

Went to the hospital this afternoon, per direction from the on-call Dr to get my HCG levels & got a call mid-afternoon that they raised only to 6200.

So from Friday afternoon 4628 to today 6200 (exactly 48 hrs)

He wanted to do another U/S which I didn't agree with being as though we JUST had one three days ago on Thursday.  But he wanted to make sure there wasn't an ectopic pregnancy going on.

Basically the U/S was inconclusive.  Said that it showed no changes from Thursday (good or bad).  The ER Dr said to follow-up again with my Dr on Tuesday. Everyone seems perplexed about whats going on.  She did say if I was having a miscarriage my numbers would not be rising at all.

There is still hope.  Although I'm not sure how much.

    Trying to still stay positive.

Hopefully I'll know more on Tuesday.  It's been an emotional Roller Coaster since we got our positive HPTs almost 3 weeks ago.
