How much do you store in a bag to freeze?

I'm trying to start a freezer supply for a couple of months in advance.  A friend told me that she stored her milk in 2-3oz/bag, but I was doing the math and that seems like it's going to get really expensive if I have a couple of months worth in the freezer at a time.  If you have a few months worth in your freezer, how much do you put in each bag?

  • I have about 3 months in my fridge. I freeze 4 oz in each bag.

  • I'm cheap and think bags are kind of expensive, so I usually put 8-10 oz in a single bag. I put whatever I pump at work into one bag unless it's more than 10 oz, then I'll split it up. Haven't had any problems so far. I use Lansinoh bags.

  • With each of my kids I have frozen in 4oz increments.

  • I like to do 3.5 - 4.5 oz per bag.  Like a pp said, someone unfamiliar with bm handling can easily, and unknowingly waste the extra bm.

They also have the bm trays that are like ice cube trays and freeze in 2oz increments.  That way you just pull out as many cubes as needed.

  • I freeze in 5oz increments. Thats what he's taken from a bottle basically since I went back to work @6 weeks. Agree that the bags can get really expensive, especially since we freeze almost 30oz a day on a good day.

If I have other amounts left over (i.e. if I pump 12 oz one day at work, I freeze 10oz in 2 bags and have 2oz left), I put it in the fridge and add to it the next day (both cold) until it gets to 5oz and then freeze. Also, if LO is unexpectedly extra hungry or our timing is off and he needs an extra bottle, we take fresh from the fridge and mix it with the cold thawed milk.

We've been lucky and not wasted more than 1oz this way when he randomly takes 4oz instead of 5. I try to get milk into the freezer within 48 hours of pumping it.

I pull out from the freezer what he will eat the next day and defrost in the fridge overnight.
