Baby Names

Nicknames

I don't get it. Why butcher the spelling of a name for the sake of a nickname?

I'm sort of referencing the below Lukas/Lucas post, but Lukas is a legit alternate spelling so I don't mind it at all.

An acquaintance just named her daughter (yes, daughter) Finnely so she could go by Finn. Because she couldn't go by Finn if her name was spelled Finley?

Jacob's nickname is Jake, Michael: Mike, I'm sure there are plenty of examples but those are off the top of my head. It's pretty normal that a nn isn't an exact offshoot of the original name.

My daughter's name is Schuyler. We spell her nickname Sky. Someone just sent me a FB message spelling her nn Schuy. I guess there's nothing wrong with that, but it's Sky. It just seems pretty obvious to me, but maybe that's just me and this is a silly semi-vent

Also, I was discussing baby names with my SIL and we love the name Cassius for a boy. She suggested we spell it Cashus so that he could have the nn Cash. Um.... yeah. Not going to butcher a name so that someone could figure out how to abbreviate my kid's name. Cash is spelled Cash, whether it's a diminutive of Cassius or not.

Re: Nicknames

  • Yes

ETA: Did you see the post (fairly recently) with someone using Schuyler as an example of a cre8tive spelling for Skylar? The poster was set straight pretty quickly, but I thought of you.

  • No I missed it! Oh boy... It's kind of an idiot litmus test for me. When people think I'm being weird or cre8tive with her name, I just lose a little respect for them. I mean, it's not THAT weird of a name. We had a vice president named Schuyler! At least ask or google it before making a comment about it

  • In TOTAL agreement with you!! Another example is that Hank is a common NN for Henry or Billy for William. Just because you want your DD to have the NN Kate instead of Cate doesn't mean you have to spell it Katherine.

    Pet peeve: Cate/Catie.

I will also say this board has opened my eyes to nick names.  Everyone in my family has one somehow...and so I was very focused on having nns for the twins.  But the more I thought about it (and it was pointed out to me), nns usually come naturally without being forced.  My nickname is Lew for my initials, my cousin is Lil Billy because he's the third William in our family, but others are more obviously like Katie and Mike.
