Okay, so I know we should be avoiding foods with raw eggs (fresh mayonnaise, hollandaise sauce, etc.). I also know that processed mayo, like you'd typically buy in a grocery store, is fine--but when you eat mayo in a restaurant, you wouldn't know how fresh/processed it is. When you all go out to eat, do you ask whether or not certain mayo/ sauces have raw eggs in them?
We were just out to eat with a few friends who don't know about my pregnancy, and I was concerned that me not drinking would arouse suspicion. As it turned out, it didn't--but when I asked the waitress if the sauce served with the crab cakes contained raw eggs, THAT became a topic of conversation. (I just said that I was more mindful of what I was eating lately, and tried to play it off as nothing).
Also, we ordered an appetizer for the table that came out drizzled with chipotle mayonnaise. I wasn't sure if there were raw eggs in that, so I did my best to scrap the mayo off before eating one...although now i'm wondering if I should have just passed on the appetizer.
Soooo...was I being too careful? Or is it standard for a pregnant woman to think about these things when she goes out to eat?

ETA -hollandaise sauce is cooked and most commercial/store bought mayo's & sauces are pasteurized, just like any soft cheeses made in the good 'ol USA.
If there is a rumor that something in unhealthy or unsafe I don't want it. I used to be an athlete so its similar to training for me. I would sue a restaurant who didn't disclose raw eggs are in their balsamic vinaigrette. I stopped eating mayo when TTC. I don't eat crabs or any kind of shellfish. There have been 5 local recalls on cilantro, lettuce, among other things and I refuse to buy any during my pregnancy. Everyone is different and if causes you stress that would be worse. I hate when people lie to me, if food has been sitting out for longer than two hours and I'm not told by MIL, etc..

Restaurants that would use raw egg in a preparation would use a pasteurized egg. So really there is nothing to freak over there.....much less sue over.
It's great that you are so viligant in your food awareness during pregnancy but you are really in for a long 6-7 months......
Not really sure what your issue is with shellfish...crab and shrimp have the lowest mercury ...with shrimp having none detectable.

With all the rumors that you will come into contact during these next months it's better to sort out which are factual otherwise you might end up being more stressed by the end than you think and without hair on your head by 38 weeks.
Generally, if you wash all produce, you don't have to worry about this. Even if it says "triple washed" on the package...wash it and you'll be fine.

Actually, you cannot reliably wash off bacteria like salmonella, e.coli and listeria. Producers go through steps to prevent contamination in growing and processing but the only way to truly kill these organisms is through cooking. That being said contracting something such as listeria is very rare.
I'm not pregnant, but I just thought I would comment. When I was pregnant with my son, I was also concerned about raw eggs in mayo sauces. I would just ask the server if they used commercial or homemade mayo in a sauce. If they said homemade, I would have them ask if there were raw eggs in it.
Some people may think it's taking it too far, but I wanted to be careful.
