DD pushing food off the tray

I'll give her something i know she eats and a veggie that i know she doesn't want but i feel like i should offer it anyway. She eats a bit then takes her hand and rubs it back and forth on the tray sending most of the food off the tray and onto the floor. If anything is left she'll continue eating. This drives me nuts!! Anyone else going through this? DS doesn't do it.

Thanks!

  • Give her a smaller amount of food on the tray?  Take the tray away when she does that?

  • Yep, my daughter does the same thing.  However, normally it is just when she is bored with the food or full.  Or cranky, or the wind blows wrong, who knows!

  • Playing with the food is our cue that he is done eating (whether it's because he's full, bored, dislikes it, whatever). We take the tray away. If he did a decent job eating we'll offer some kind of dessert--fruit or a gerber cookie. If not, he's simply done for the meal. If she still seems to be eating, I'd probably go with PPs suggestion and just put less on the tray.

  • thanks ladies! it's right when i give it to her most of the time. it's so annoying & frustrating.  I'll try giving her less. I do think my MIL is giving them too much at snack time though because it's like she isn't hungry so she eats a few bites and then it happens.

    Thanks for the input ladies!!

  • Yes, DD has been doing this since this summer. It's so annoying especially now that I'm pregnant and massive and picking up tiny bits of food off of the floor is like a presidential fitness test from middle school. Unfortunately for us she's so, so small. So the only thing we can do is take her tray away which is counteracting the futile attempts to fatten her up! It's really a merry-go-round of knives.

  • When LO pushes his food around on his plate or tray, that usually means he is done.  So I take it away.

If he asks for more, I give him some, but give it in very small portions.

this. also if i knew DD is still hungry but just refusing to eat, i take the tray away until she's ready to try again. but it was right around this time that we started doing time-outs. sometimes taking the tray away and spinning her chair around at the table for 1 minute was enough to motivate her to stop throwing or just eat what was there.

  • My son sweeps the food he hates off the tray or picks it up and drops it directly on the floor! I just tell him "no food on the floor". He is getting a little better w/ persistence & time......... *sigh*

  • DD does this too..I usually give her something she likes too, and sometimes she will eat both.  If she keeps pushing it around then I ask if she is done and to give it to me.  She does it, but usually eats about half is what is on her plate.  I'm trying really hard for her not to realize that if she drops food on the floor that the dogs eat it.

  • DS throws food to the dog and it is so annoying! I have started putting the dog in the other room, and if ds throws food, he has to get down, pick up his food and throw it on the garbage. It took about a week of this and now he rarely throws food!
  • Yes! LO went through this phase.  When he'd do this I'd tell him that we don't throw food and I'd take it all away.
